listen i set up one of these...and yes there is a somewhat BS academical partnership we have with some university teachers in education
i sometimes cringe when seeing my center on the cover of a book about the power of hiphop and slam poetry in the classroom
but as far as i am concerned this is the cred that allows us to get our measely funding from the city
the studio itself has production equipment, records (shouts to crabmonger), turntables a booth and a stage
we give music theory lessons, show documentary on hiphop around the world, writing/prose lessons, Production, vocal coah, DJ coach, event planning
so its not about ''saving'' the youth through the language ''they understand''
its about offering services to a clientele that wants it, keeping them focused on positive activities and making great music
they released to mixtapes and are planning a mini tour in brazil in collaboration with afroreggae
i'll post audio soon...but let's not put all HipHop programs together
we got a jazz cat and some RnB singin rookies too so its not all hiphop...

    I'm all for afterschool programs.

I am lol'n against institutions CHARGING tuition, offering a DIPLOMA from an ACCREDITED university in freestyling.

    Big difference IMO.

Music CAREER in Beat Production? lol.

Is hip hop art? Is it a skill? Is it music? Does it have value?

IF the answers are yes, then I am all for teaching it.

If it is just moving a record back and forth, and cursing a lot and crap with out the c, then it should not be taught.

To me this is very much like rock music camps - if you have talent in this field then you don't need to go to school or camp or any of that shit.

It's a fine line between dreams and delusions.
