Best Horace Silver recordings?

    He was super consistent so a lot of it depends on what styles you prefer. I couldn't really hang with his later 70's cosmic stuff, though I haven't revisited in years.

    Love me some Horace.
    I find myself listening to "Tokyo Blues" and "at the village gate"(the one with "Filthy McNasty") the most.

    Yeah there's not much that I would NOT recommend, he is simply my favorite piano player and composer.

    Some of my personal favorites:
    - Serenade To A Soul Sister Lp (Psychedelic Sally, Jungle Juice, title track)
    - Song For My Father (title track & The Natives Are Restless Tonight)
    - Blowing The Blues Away (Sister Sadie)
    - Doin' The Thing At The Village Gate (Very great live session)
    - The Cape Verdian Blues
    - Silver's Serenade
    - You Gotta Take A Little Love
    - Total Response (Won't you open up your senses etc...)

    There's also a late 70s or 80s lp with a hideous cover but that has a killer previously unreleased vocal version of Senor Blues that was recorded in the 60s.

    Good list - Song For My Father, Total Response and the Village Gate LPs are my top tips.

    Horace plays on a few of the cuts too IIRC.

    exactly,the 27th man album shreds. michael brecker plays such a mean solo on gregory is here. also a nice version of weldon's liberated brother and moacir's kathy. such a good album.
    about cape verdean blues, i didn't realize until recently that Silver is half Cape Verdean(his dad was from there).



    here's a nice version of liberated brother with a bob berg and tom harrell.


    just found another vid from this same tour:



    another great album of his is Spirtualizing the Senses on silveto. this album is from 82 or 83 but don't let that scare you, it most certainly shreds.

    Even though its not rare or high dollar, 'Total Response' has been a white whale of mine for years.Funkyou! didn't even have a copy when i was at his warehouse a few months ago, which had me further thinking that the record gods were playing with me lol.
    finally got one last week at record exchange here in St.Louis.

    I think (IMO) one of his best recordings on Blue Note and underrated too! His version oy "My One and Only Love" is killer, No Smoking is a stomper, The Back Beat is just a stellar workout, and just the whole lp is a great listen from start to finish
