I can't man, I dunno. I mean, I just relinquished control. Best decision of my life possibly.

This is the only photo that I will ever show from the trip.

I can't tell if that's a Clydesdale and this is a shot from the flick "Attack Of The 50 Ft. Cosmo"

    OR

If it's a Shetland Pony and this is a shot from the flick "The Drunk Horse Whisperer"

  • Well, take some time to recover,
then give us a full report.

Oh, and I can attest that Cosmo Baker is a damn fine dj.
    You killed it, dude.

If you did it right, and I'm sure you did, your wife should be able to take a lick of your post-NOLA forearm sweat and that alone should send her into somewhat of a mindbending stupor.

this is what i send to my friends who ask me about nola. might be a bit outdated but certainly enough to get you started

    French Quarter:

    1. Port of Call - Hamburger. It's on Esplanade.
    2. Fiorella's - Fried Chicken. It's on French Market Place.
    3. Central Grocery - Muffaletta. It's on Decatur.
    4. Irene's - Oysters Irene. It's on St. Phillip.
    5. Luke - Fried Porkchops/Cochon de Lait Po-Boy. This is one of John Besh's restaurants. It's on St. Charles, just outside the quarter, in the CBD.
    6. Gumbo Shop - Alligator Sauce Piquante/Chicken Espagnole. Can't remember the street it's on but it's right by Jackson Square.
    7. Bennachin (African) - get the Bennachin (African Jambalaya) or the Ndole. On Royal St. They have a cool ginger soda as well IIRC.
    8. Herbsaint - Duck or the Ribeye. It's in the Warehouse District on St. Charles. They have different menus for lunch and dinner. This is actually considered one of the best restaurants in the US.

    Uptown:

    1. Jacques-imos - Fried Chicken (though everything is great here). It's on Oak St.
    2. Domilise's - Roast Beef Po-Boy (or Shrimp or Oyster... can't go wrong). It's on Annunciation.
    3. Franky & Johnny's - Fried Shrimp/Boiled Crawfish/Fried Bell Pepper RIngs. Arabella St.
    4. Camellia Grill - Burgers/Waffles/Omelettes. On Carrollton, just off St. Charles.
    5. Lebanon's - Lula Kabob (Lebanese Lamb Sausage). On Carrollton & Willow.
    6. Vincent's - Crabmeat Canneloni. On St. Charles & Burdette.

If you really want to ball, hit one of these places:

    Commander's Palace
Galatoire's (my favorite restaurant in N.O.)
    Arnaud's
    Antoine's
    Restaurant August
    Bayona

    OTHER:

Po Boy's - my favorite spot in the city is Parkway Bakery which is near the bayou st. john in mid-city and can be accessed pretty easily from the Canal St. streetcar line. http://www.parkwaybakeryandtavernnola.com; 538 Hagan Ave

Getting around: definitely fly to MSY; cab is $30 flat from the airport. Once you're here take either cabs (United is the best company) or the streetcars if youre going either uptown or mid-city

    Things to do:
    1. Don't go to any place whatsoever on Bourbon St. that is located before St. Ann street. After St. Ann you have gay establishments, if that's your thing and a couple of local places. There are decent bars in the Quarter that I really like going to but they are of the seedy ilk frequented by lots of tranny hookers who don't mind playing cash money on the juke box. (Double Play at St. Louis and Dauphine is my spot for this).

    2. Go see some awesome live music.
    a. Maple Leaf is a good place to start with. Rebirth on Tuesdays and I've caught Mardi Gras indians and other really good stuff on random nights.
    b. Check the schedule at Tipitinias - one of the best live shows i've seen there in the past few months was Hot 8 Brass Band, one of the Neville's, Trombone SHorty, and 5th Ward Weebie.
    c. Thursday night at Vaughn's in the Bywater with Kermit Ruffins and the BBQ swingers. A jazz legend in a small venue cooking all the BBQ you can eat and then playing all night. $10 and a real new orleans experience.
    d. Soul Rebels Brass Band play every thursday uptown at Les Bon Temp Roule but it's all college kids and Kermit Ruffins is way better.
    e. Mimi's in the Marigny - really awesome spot for CHEAP tapas and live music every night of the week. Probably one of my favorite bars in the city and have randomly popped in on some really great music several times.
    f. Ernie K-Doe's Mother in Law Lounge - started by the R&B legend Mr. Ernie K-Doe and now run by his wife Antoinette. A really amazing New Orleans experience in the heart of the Treme where jazz was born. (take a cab and call ahead). the music here is local r&b acts and the place will blow you away. http://www.k-doe.com/lounge.shtml and for history on the legend http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernie_K-Doe
    g. Frenchmen Street - this street is right past the Quarter in the beginning of the Marigny and is lined with music clubs. Check the spotted cat as it's free. My hairdress told me that last summer she walked into Snug Harbor on a Tuesday to find Stevie Wonder at the piano.
    h. Donna's - http://www.donnasbarandgrill.com 800 N. Rampart St. Check the schedule for live jazz and brass. I've also been told that the burger here is the best in the city.
-these are the places that come to mind off the top of my head. But I can't stress enough that almost all of the places in the quarter are fake and suited for conventioneers. Pick up a Gambit Weekly newspaper to see what's going on.

    3. Culture stuff that you should NOT miss:
    a.Second Lines on Sunday
every Sunday and they are really one of the best things I've ever been to in my entire life. The only problem is that they are hard to find out about since they are still very much a community event. They stop pretty much mid-may and pick up again after labor day.

    b. Backstreet Museum - http://www.backstreetmuseum.org/ - this museum is dedicated to the history of jazz, brass bands, and mardi gras indians and is in the Treme where jazz was born. It's run by this guy Sylvester and his wife who will personally guide you through the place. This is only museum that you must see if you care about american music history and future.

Super Sunday is always the sunday before St. Joseph's Day (it was last week) and all of the gangs from the city come together. But if you miss that, you can still catch indian practice around the city all year long. I think practice goes down in central city at Handa Wanda's every sunday at 5 but I'd check on that - also definitely be aware of your surroundings in this neighborhood. Address: 2415 Dryades Street .

    d. Drag Shows - for some reason this city has the most entertaining drag shows I've ever seen with, hands down, the best music I've ever seen drag queens perform. Check out Starlight by the Park on Saturdays starting at either midnight or 1am - 834 N Rampart St. http://www.starlightbythepark.com or the trailer trash revue which happens once a month at big daddy's bar in the marigny - 2513 Royal St (both gay bars - duh)

Otherwise - ride the street cars, take a walk through audubon park, walk up to the banks of the missippi and grab a drink and watch the water, explore random parts of the city like the bywater and marigny, and talk to as many locals as possible since most are really out-goingly nice and actually really like to suggest things for visitors to do that aren't the normal tourist nonsense.

I hope that you have a great time. MAKE SURE TO HAVE THE SHRIMP AND GRTS AT CAFE AMELIE ON ROYAL STREET

Man, was there for a bachelor party a couple weekends ago. Still recovering from that one.

We were there starting on a Friday, but one of our friends didn't show up until Sunday afternoon. Within an hour of being there, he ate mushrooms and molly and drank an entire bottle of gin. He then tore up his ticket to the Saints game for no apparent reason. Later when he got to the gate of the Superdome, he tried to check in his bags, even though he had no bags. Later on, he got took for a few hundred bucks by a hooker at Harrah's.

Point being, live it up...but don't be that guy, especially if you can't afford it.

On the flipside, another friend after a full night of extreme drug/alcohol/stripper intake, popped off the couch at 5am to catch a cab to Harrah's and came back a mere 2 hours later with 3 grand that he won playing blackjack.

He went to LSU though, so he's a vet.

ha! sounds rowdy. Im definitely not looking to go all out on the drugs / alcohol / debauchery, more into music / food / kicking it / records possibly.

thanks for the recommendation y'all! Staying in Marigny so I think we're close to a lot of good shit!

    Kermit Ruffins
    Respect?

He often pops up on tv doing a Louis Armstrong imitation thing. Seems kinda cheesy.
Is he the real deal? Does he have his own thing?

Kermit's a founding member of the Rebirth Brass Band. So yeah, that alone earns him respect. But since then, doing his own thing including being the grillmaster during his shows at Vaughn's only adds to it.

Apple Barrel bar in the Marigny for local gutter punk and boozy floozy experience.
Haha, I'd say thats an appropriate characterization. When I was there a 50 year old man w/ two 20 year old girlfriends were hanging out there. The girls were flashing the bartender for drinks (its a tiny bar btw) and eventually went to make out or whatever in the bathroom for thirty minutes while several people needed to get in. They had great music there.

Also the Blue Nile across the street is a lot of fun. After losing money at the casino I popped in there for a great brass band, made me feel better about wasting my money. Definitely check out all of Frenchman street, but those two bars were pretty memorable.

Getting a bike and riding around town is a great way to see the city, I would recommend it. Also drink as much Abita Strawberry as possible.
