soundcloud is getting very strict with copy right issues for mixes lately...maybe mixcloud then

havent read more than site one yet cuz im busy so maybe someone mentioned it but mixcloud has a upload limit of 90mb per mix (maybe a bit more or less) so dependin on what bitrate u want them on there that probably wont work

    btw
if 300 strutters paid 40$ for a tshirt we would have enough for a year on upgrade server and a bit leftover for the site
    right?

I've got five bucks on keeping mixes active. That's a great feature of the site, I don't know why you guys are so down on the mixes. Did you even listen to Tightie Whiteys?

Word, I love the mixes section. I listen to them at work almost every day. I can't download things here, so I appreciate the streaming. Also soundcloud crashes my IE or it makes IE run out of memory.

I wholeheartedly support the idea of reaching out to the design-talented Strutters and printing off a run of different t-shirts.

There are some massivly talented folks here and i think the shirts would go like cakes that are hot. Could be a nice money spinner...

    DO IT.

    For the childrens.

    Fuck a city guide.

    No.

The city guides are an amazing resourse. They serve a unique purpose and highlight the community aspect of SS that really makes this place great.

I suspect that a lot of the visitors the city guide pages recieveare in and out pretty quickly though, this is to be expected as the Timmy Digalots cut and run, but i also suspect that the city guides are a valuable new way that people are discovering SS, and not all of these new guests are Timmys.

Or was it 'Tommy'? i can't recall.

I think you paraphrased it pretty well. The City Guide is Search Engine porn and has drawn a lot of traffic. The submissions and community chatter isn't strong, but it has been lurked on like crazy...

    Raj,
I was dealing with a similar issue on our new artist co-op. We have a streaming player for affiliate artist mixes and my goal was to provide the quickest possible stream at the highest quality (320 ogg/mp3). We are using Amazon S3 which is a pay per play cloud based data streaming system. It might be an option, it might not but i thought i would throw it out there. My new mix Music To Board To vol.1 got 66,000 plays in a week and it translated to 20$ US give or take. It all depends on where the data goes as requests are made. Now, I'm not sure how that works across number of hits each mix gets in your section but it's what I paid for that week and as a point of reference, on a 3G network phone a 1 hour mix loads up in roughly 3 seconds, thats 320, roughly 120mb - fast as fusk. your mixes are at 192 so it may be a cheap option. Files are uploaded as data and downloaded as such, no intrusive music genome or legality.

The player can be viewed/listened to here:

As far as the mix section goes here, I would highly recommend some editing. Not all of the mixes there are worthy of the bandwith you are providing them. 20 mixes at any given time should well suffice the free users IMO. A little competition in getting an actual mix together to be one of the select hosted would be a good thing methinks.

Yeah Jehovwet as well as Spelunk recommended this... I'm a bit wary of what could entail with the pay per click sort of thing.

I'm also considering MediaFire. NOT the free service where you get directed to a page with popup ads galore. With the paid accounts you can host direct links and get unlimited commercial free bandwidth.

    Raj:

If I were in your shoes, my evaluation would be whether or not it's more realistic for me to:
    1) Permanently create/increase a *stable* revenue stream, or,
    2) Permanently reduce server load.

Between the two, #2 is the easier way to go. Not necessarily the more desirable, but rather, the easiest solution in front of you. Whether that means eliminating the section, reducing the number of mixes or finding a 3rd party solution, I think what you need to figure out is just how crucial this section is to the site as a whole. Maybe it's time for another poll, just to evaluate actual usage?

#1, I think, is fraught with too many variables. A t-shirt sale could raise short term revenue but not long term. Same goes with some kind of heatrocks fundraising option. You need a stable stream of revenue to maintain this upgrade and the only way I see that happening would be for you to charge a subscription fee for all members but 1) I'm sure this runs against your personal impulse and 2) you're likely to run into people who'd argue, "if I don't use the mixes section, why should I subsidize it?"

Just to further clarify my statement that the djs should be responsible for hosting their mixes at least initially, I am strongly against tying the section to mixcloud, divshare, mediafire or any other proprietary media player. The uploader should not be Soulstrut and the artist should be able to choose where works best for them, whether that's any of the multitude of upload sites, online players or personal direct links.

My main point: Soulstrut should not be concerned with where a mix is uploaded, just that it can directly link to it somehow. The community should be responsible for reupping the (worthy) mixes.

The Guide is not that old where its become a crucial element. I dont recall having a guide since 2005, and the site seemed fine, unless you wanna factor in the "what's there to do in Kansas City?" every three months.

If it helps bring traffic, cool.
