For some reason I feel like Rock may know the answer to this:

I remember a documentary about snakehandlers, and I don't think its Holy Ghost People, because I've seen that a few times, that had this crazy electrified hillbilly band in it. Anybody know the movie or the band?

    This??

  • No. This band looked more early 70's, young longhairs playing electric guitars.

  • And I don't think its the later Movie Heaen Come Down, becuase that's 2006 and I remember seeing this in the late '90s. But I don't know if it was actually on TV or if it was footage filmed by my then GF's friend that could have been on a film he was working on, which then means it could be Heaven Come Down, only he finished the film almost a decade later.

Is "Searching For The Wrong-Eyed Jesus" a possibility?

Not from what I can see by the trailer. These guys were like the early 70s Dead if they had been pentacostal snake handlers.

There are a bunch of clips out there from the Jolo Church in WV. I don't know if anyone has done a long doc on them. They're not exactly longhairs, but the music gets pretty nuts and approaches Hasil Adkins territory at times.

    Then there's this:

And then there's the time the Jesus Camp kids went to a Venom show:

I thought maybe it was this too, but I distincly remember that there was footage of the band and that they were more country/rock jam then this. They looked more like David Korech.

The Jolo documentary (band) sounded like the Dead to me, really electric drugged out jamband shit. And there were wild eyed longhairz.

  • reminds me of that one scene from "Vanishing Point". love that film.

i think i saw this on pbs a long time ago
    (late 80's? frontline or something)
    blew my mind
started looking for this stuff on vinyl hard
my friend jack found a beat copy of this style at a backwoods wv yard sale
have not turned up any for myself
when billy poor was setting up at lancaster i hounded him to find this stuff
he was based in north alabama where one of the main churches had relocated
after some snake bite death related services in wv
he said he knew what i was talking about but never came thru

as i recall, there was some drum & electric guitar duo banging it on at one of the churches on the pbs show

I thought the Church, Prison and Jesus Bar-B-Q scenes were amazing.....I can see someone from down that way looking at this film as every reason in the world to move the hell away...
