I never thought Cho was funny and I've seen plenty of pieces by her. And as Oliver noted, her show was a pretty typical sitcom with nothing that good. Cho was in one movie from the 1990s, can't remember the name that I actually liked, but can't remember the name.
And Dane Cook? Really????? The guy tells stories with no points at all, and people think that's funny??? Ex: My dad, we had Thanksgiving dinner with him, I always wanted to go to this dinner because it was with my dad, we got there, we got a lot of food, I love those dinners, goes to next story. WTF???!!!!
Barry Manilow is probably considered a good singer by other singers. I dunno.
I did make the"popular = valid" point. I tried word it where I was just shrug my shoulders there like, "hey: what are you going to do?" Not liking the guy is different than saying he's not funny. People like his stuff!
As for Mencia, those dudes who worked for him (and from whom he ripped off entire acts--like the dead dude? So gnarly.) all admit that he's a great comic. He could just stick with the 80% that wasn't lifted and be great.
But yeah. The "hey he's popular so he must be good" argument is, like I said, probably a pretty valid one with comics, who measure success by laughs.
When I was around 19, she did a free show at my college. A couple of friends and I ended up walking out after 20 minutes because she was so painfully unfunny. That was 13 years ago, so maybe she's gotten better. However, I don't care enough to find out.

Idiots need to laugh too, ya know?
So you're laying the blame for your terrible argument off on anonymous "other singers" and "those dudes" and hypothetical "comics." Good move, because you sure don't want to own it yourself.
This shit still managed to become a circle jerk of the same ole lame white dudes w/ HBo specials.
Talmbout Dane Cook and shit. GTFOHWTB. Fuckin unfunny batches. Same ole Lame ole, internet comedy trash.

Can we get another Asian- American Sitcom? And dont try and bring up that new Cartoon.
i saw some comedy last week for sf sketchfest and margaret came out singing with the guy from the new pornographers. i really want to like her, but i just don't find her funny at all.
i remember seeing all american girl back in the day. i don't think it necessarily translated for most folks back then (not sure how it would now for most of america), given that it was based around her stand up comedy act / perspective of a first generation korean-american being raised by a traditional korean mom in california. i don't remember it lasting past a season. the show was definitely more watered down compared to the bits she would do about her parents / culture & race, which i found funny. i haven't really checked for margaret cho in quite awhile since most of what i've encountered is her going off about the gays, being a fag hag, sex, drugs, body image, etc. still, she seems like she's got a lot of under-represented perspectives to share with the world. i can respect that.
for what it's worth she's had an impact on enough people to the point that one of my best friends would often be told she reminded them of margaret cho. file under all-look-same.
I am kinda in disbelief that that much persuasion and typing went into defending Dane Cook as a good comedian.
I think less discourse occurs in the "is hip hop dead?" threads. On top of that it was off-topic...some twilight zone shit.
i watched a few eps. was a pretty mediocre show. i remember one ep had quentin tarantino as a guest during the height of pulp fictions popularity. he and cho were dating at the time.
i wonder when there will be another show with a azn lead? maybe in another 50 years...
can anyone name another show that starred a asian?
i agree. i know you were a fan of it, when did it fall off in your opinion?
Somewhere around the Chris Rock/Anthony Michael Hall days.
If your home on a Sat nite in your 20s/30's checkin SNL, Houston we have a problem.
But i dont wanna open up the convo to SNL fans to defend the brand.
On Wiki, they state that there was a Leading Asian sitcom w/ Mr. Miyagi/Arnold that predates AMG by a decade.
In 2011 i dont see why Everyone Loves Raymond couldnt have an all Asian cast w/out the overt social context.
Ken Jeong is on a come up or has been bubblin' for a minute. He can be the father to the regular formulaic sitcom cast w/ the front door on the left w/ the kitchen door on the right. Get some good writers and a hot mom and call it a day.

The new Nikita?
But there seem to be a quite a few shows now where Asians play main characters nowadayz. I'm guessing there will be a Cosby show built around an South Asian family a la Cosby on a major network soon.

Mr T And Tina, 35 years ago. Pat Morita was the star.

Also, what exactly is "true stand-up"? Some fifth elements shit?
My brother spent a lot of time in the closet. One of the hints that he swung the other way was -- after The Beaches soundtrack, after the "Golden Girls" and "Designing Women" fandom and after being a member of the drama club -- was the presence of a Margaret Cho DVD in his collection, filed right next to his copy of Scorcese's The Age of Innocence. I never personally found her funny, but the GLBT crowd seems to love her, so at least she was a following.

America's Best Dance Crew. We own that thing.
THINK ON IT
Each time I saw her standup she did pretty much verbatim the exact same set about her immigrant parents, making fun of their accents, etc.
Unfunny to the max.
Never saw her sitcom though.
I chortled.
