This tape was the first thing that crossed my mind when I saw the title of the thread.

Just kidding, but I'm interested to check it.

  • I've got a ton of great Thai & Khmer psych / rock / pop stuff, but haven't heard any Lao music prior to the '90s. My fianc??e is Lao and her brother used to play in a Lao rock band in the '80s - I asked him and he couldn't recommend any either. Downloading this now - excited to check it out. Thanks for posting!

  • oh man, this is kind of awesome - i'm on the last song right now. thanks for sharing!

my roommate came downstairs and said it sounded like a restaurant in here.

  • Where did you get this?

Listening now, getting sporadic translations from my girl.

I found it by browsing the oft-neglected music>>cassettes>>world ebay category. I actually got into a bit of a bidding war with somebody else over this. I always wondered if they knew what it was, or just stumbled on it like I did. Well, if they're out there listening, I hope this gesture buries the hatchet.

This tape also makes me feel like I'm in a restaurant. I'd be keen to read any translations.

Kinda like it. I'm gonna be in Laos in two weeks time, taking this one with me as a soundtrack.

Any words/subject that might upset anyone?

  • From the few things my lady was overhearing and calling out, it seems to be pretty straightforward SE Asian pop music: I love you but we are divided by countries, I want you to be happy and have money, let's celebrate holidays, all that. She said she remembers her parents listening to it while she was growing up, so I wouldn't worry about playing this in public.

Where are you gonna be? Vientiane? Luang Prabang? I'll be over there about this time next year. Super excited.

Flying into Luang Prabang from Bangkok with a few friends. Going upstream on the Mekong River to the Thai border with slow boats. Most people go the other way so hopefully the boats will be less crowded. Lots of stories online of people being scammed but it's gonna be fun. Those waterfalls outside Luang Prabang also looks quite spectacular.

I just saw that show River Monsters where dude did exactly what you are planning and got major hassle from Laos. Apparently the border is disputed. He was told to gtfo, but he said if he didn't have a camera crew, he might have been less lucky.

Laos was super-chill, impossible to get stressed there. You'll love it, I'm sure.

And you will drink loads of these (aka the best beer in SE Asia):

Had no problem at the border, I think the border dispute is not a big issue at the moment. Two days on a loud slow boat was alittle much though.

    BUMP

A few weeks back I came across a grip of dollar-bin Indian pop cassette tapes and finally got around to recording one of them.
