"Wait for it..."

Am I the only one who thinks this is silly?? The forced (faux) anticipation makes the punchline less funny to me. I was reminded of it in joke thread, but to be fair it bugs me when it's done on tv shows, stand up routines, etc too.

The reason for doing it here, is you don't want someone to accidentally read the punchline before you are done with the set up.

I don't see how it could possibly improve the timing of a joke in real time.

A Texan, a Razorback and an Okie were talking.

The Razorback was bragging and said "In Arkansas we have pine trees that grow clear to heaven!".
    "Really!?!" the other 2 replied.
    "Missed by that much."
The Texan of course would not be outdone, "That's nothing, we have oil gushers that shoot oil all the way to heaven".
    "Really!?!"
    "Missed by that much."

The Okie was thinking to himself what a bunch of bullshitting braggarts.

"At Tulsa general hospital a woman gave birth out her asshole."
    "Really!?!"

    Missed by that much.

That sounds like a sight gag joke. Use of hand gestures would help.

An empty space to scroll down is okay with me. It's the "wait for it" part that irks me. Seems pretentious, like "I'm about to blow your mind but I'll do it when I'm good and ready." Bah. My gut has yet to be busted.

Anyone know the origin of this phrase?

Also helps to use Don Adams voice. That, or an Oklahoma accent.

Not nearly as funny as your usual posts.

Did my little joke hurt the big Texan's feelings?

Either that or your joke sucked.....decide for yourself.

Adam and Steve, a gay couple, decide to use their sperm and have a baby.
After the baby is born, they're looking at him through the nursery's glass at the hospital.
"Look how good he is", said Steve.
    "And quiet too", adds Adam.
The nurse exits the nursery and Steve says to the her, "He's a good quiet baby, isn't he?"
The nurse responds, "he's quiet now but wait til we take the pacifier out of his ass".

Maybe it's regional, but I seldom hear it used this way. Most often I hear it used semi-ironically, when the punchline or payoff is wholly predictable, not at all mind-blowing or gut-busting. "Man I spent all week fiending hard for that new Lisa Loeb/Jeezy split cassingle, and on Friday I finally get down to that shitty no-good record store that I fucking hate and--wait for it--they were sold out."

Hilarious, quick, someone get this guy his own TV show. I assume you have jokes about the disabled to round off the set after the paedo and homophobic material has warmed them up?
