Really, are there any other type?

Anyways, feel free to keep your actual political views out of it, but why are the boards left leaning?

I know who he is, but Wilders missed his calling as a Euro villain in a Die Hard sequel.

    I'll give it a shot......

    1) Music Genre - I would think that music boards that discuss Country and Xian music would tend to be right leaning. Folks who are into music that promotes patriotism, blue collar values and Jesus are inherently more conservative than those who listen to music that promotes drug use, crime and rebellion. This would include rock, psych, rap, etc.

    2) Age - The average age of folks who spend their time on music sites is going to be fairly young. I don't think it's incorrect to assume that younger people tend to be more liberal than folks over 40 or 50. Very few people have more liberal ideas than I did when I was 20 years old.

    3) Dominant personalities - Every music site I have been to is dominated by a clique of members who tend to dictate the mood of the board. I know for a fact that there are more Conservative members here at SS who choose not to post their political views rather than deal with the harrassment and disrespect doled out by the dominant members. I find it amusing that SS members would point to members like Horseleech and myself as examples of conservatives that are shown respect here when in reality we are pretty much moderates close to center.

  • I would also add that the people who have the *time" to spend many hours on music message boards are probably not raking in millions. Since people who are making millions tend to vote more conservatively, you will not find many of them on music forums.

I would be willing to bet that any Let Freedom Reign music board you hit up pushing opposite opinions, will get you banned a hell of a lot faster than on the strut or waxi.

Isn't this the guy who quit waxidermy over some asshurtedness?

b/w I try to stay out of political threads because this board is way too namby pamby centrist let's all try to listen to each others viewpoints crap. I think strut lost its collective edge in Nov 08. The rightwingers are not cool dudes just because one of them collects brazilian turds and the other one likes rap and vlogging. They are herbs.

I guess it depends on how you define 'left-leaning'. By which people's / country's standards.

I mean, I guess Obama is considered a democrat, implying he's liberal / left leaning in the US. But in other countries his policies and views would put him more in line with right of center parties.

Anywhoo - seems like there's plenty of right leaners on this here board, for example. I would not describe it as left-leaning - as a defining characteristic.

Hah! You took the words right out my head. I was going to say basically the same things til I read your post.
I'll tell you - one major thing, imo, is that despite some general left-leaning stances, the strong belief in the right to bear/use arms and very little gun control is a huge difference I see in what I, as a Canadian, consider left ideology.
As well, things like same sex marriage and decriminalizing mj might be able to take hold in some states, but they have strong support from coast to coast in Canada.

I wouldn't have noticed that the board was left leaning were it not for the occasional rightist provocateur. Whilst the majority here just lean left, the minority swing right off the dial.

By the way what do you guys think of Hitchens? Interesting figure in that he's a socially liberal hawk

Hitchens is one of my favorite writers and has been for a long time. He's got a severe case of cancer right now and I hope he gets past it.

I'm not sure "hawk" fits with him. He just generally detests authoritarianism of any sort.

I agree completely. I admire any leftist writers who were able to adapt and revise their positions post 1989. So many on the "old" left attacked him for abandonning marxism but they don't get it - he never abandonned his principles, just his affiliations. I'm gutted about his cancer too and I think that he's handling it with typical stoicism and humour.

There's some great you tube on him but I'll stop hi-jacking this thread with it after this

Hitchens is debating Tony Blair on the 26th here in Toronto. Should be a great debate if Hitchens is not sick.

And yeah, I wouldn't quite classify the strut a lefty site. While on a few subjects it might well be, but on others... Not so much.
