But the things that Labour has done wrong over the years (cosying up to businesses, costly PFI deals, sleaze etc.) would be persued even more vigourously under the Tories. They are greedy cunts, pure and simply who think that everything should be for profit and personal gain.

At least they are transparent about it.

Recent Expenses Sleaze was a multi-party clustaphuck, remember. This has done more to tar the greedy bastards with the same brush than anything else.

When I were but a nipper, and confused about what all this political lark were about, I had it explained to me thus:

The Tories run the country like a business, and Labour run it like a family.

That worked for me. As a council estate (think "Shameless" sans humour) lad who has (for now) escaped council estate by grasping the rope ladder of cheap education, I would find myself hypocritical voting for anyone keen on keeping the "Oiks" in their place by raising an edifice of insurmountably colossal financial central-digits to the likes of me.

I advocate motherfuckers that are able-bodied and happy to spend my taxes on weed and toxic credit on 90" tellys have to go out and pick up their offspring's immortal urban detritus that they would otherwise revel in.

When you see a rotting estate held together by weeds and satellite dishes, sprinkled with abandoned mattresses that pre-date Stonehenge, divvent tell me there is no work out there.

Clean that fucking mess up for starters.

great to see the libbers smashing it in the polls. I think i'm going to vote for them, in my borough they are only trailing the reds by a few points, so a few more votes could tip them over.

I don't know how many of you/us have felt any direct benefit from things like a reduction in child poverty, or the introduction of a minimum wage and programmes like Sure Start, but there are plenty of people who have. I can near as dammit guarantee that anything along those lines - y'know, tangible improvements in the quality of life for the poor and disadvantaged - will be the first things to go under a Tory government. As a lifelong Labour voter, I have no end of misgivings about the direction Blair and Brown have taken this country in, but the alternatives are, for the most part, too awful to contemplate. And, frankly, this notion that change in and of itself is a good thing is fucking ridiculous - I mean, be certain that "a change, any change" is what you really want, because you'll have at least five years to repent at fucking leisure if you wake up one morning and realise that, actually, this wasn't what we meant at all.

I could just about stomach a hung parliament, if only to see what the Lib Dems were actually capable of if they held the balance of power, but I came of age during the Thatcher years and I sincerely believe that virtually everything that's gone wrong with this country over the last three decades can be traced, either directly or indirectly, back to Tory policy in Thatcher's first two terms. If that makes me sound like an unreconstituted anachronistic Trot, then trust me, I give even less of a fuck than you think.

I also note that there is a Gucci Jon Ronson shoe in the offing.

fall back old chap. i don't think you can see how he behaved as anything other than despicable. the alliance with bush was pathetic. so many lies were told. so many lives were lost that it amounts to genocide. and he's so unapologetic about the whole thing, just to add insult to injury.

I agree that all of the bad things in our society were entrenched or originated in the Thatcher years, when I also came of age. At that time I also joined the Labour party, signed up by a fresh faced Harriet Harman no less.
Right now, I want nothing to do with either that cunt or any of her equally rotten colleagues.

Clegg's the boy for me. I personally feel better for having rid myself of a labour-forever mindset.

    For me, there's

Blair and Ashdown also agreed to create the Jenkins Commission to conduct a public inquiry into the case for electoral reform. Chaired by Liberal Democrat peer Roy Jenkins, the commission recommended replacing the first-past-the-post electoral system with a system of proportional representation for use in General Elections, in line with a key demand of Ashdown and his party. However, Blair remained unconvinced of the case for electoral reform,[citation needed] and the commission's recommendations have never been passed into law.

Ashdown reckoned Blair had promised this, and the co-operation of the two parties was founded on PR being pushed through, Ashdown resigned in protest, Blair became Our Great Leader, plus the never-found-WMD*, the dodgy dossier, David Kelly, the erosion of civil liberties, and generally being a smarmy cnut.

    * sounds like sparklers would've been about as much as would've reached Europe.

Believe, I would have thought the whole thing simply verbal smoke-and-mirrors until I did a stint with the NHS about 10 years ago, and they were all amazed that many promises made to them had actually come to fruition.

It almost made me less cynical.

So is there anyone here that needs convincing that a great deal of this country's problems can be traced back to Thatcher selling-off the nation's family jewels (privatisation) to enable pre-election tax cuts?

Unfortunately Brown made a bit of a gaff with some gold that was kicking around, although that mistake almost seems trivial compared to the foreign policy choices of Blair, and his need to be seen as "a playa".

Would vote Labour if they resembled a Socialist party representing the working classes, and I'm glad that things like mimimum wage came about... but from what I understand, they weren't particularly quick or keen to change policies set in motion by Thatcher's regime, such as the gradual dismantling of the NHS. Talk of changes Labour made is cheapened by the fact that they probably realised they'd get a better price for the motor if they put some alloy wheels on it.

Fair enough. I don't find Clegg especially objectionable, and anyone who has the Mail, Express and Telegraph simultaneously shitting themselves and reaching for The Bumper Book Of Smears can't be entirely without merit. I generally feel a need to vent at the sight of platitudes about "change", especially when the subtext seems to be "change it back to how it was".

lol. foreign policy get to fuck. what we want is a good spat about the economy.

on that issue i have no convictions that any of them will be any better than another. i actually think the way brown handled it wasn't bad. no one likes a recession, and obviously joe public is fucked off with the banks being propped up by the government, but joe public is clearly far too stupid and clueless to understand what would have happened if they hadn't done that. we're talking a financial apocalypse, people selling their houses and shit. if you want to blame someone, blame the baby boomers for inventing this fucking shitty system, for inflating house prices, for being greedy and taking shortcuts. [/devilsadvocate]. whats your take fellas.

Not exactly sure what his stance on PR was after all of that, but the polls at the end of the vid were revealing - in '92, more Labour voters wanted PR than others... did they get it? Did they fuck.
