Conan O'Brien's show is always pretty good.
Letterman, an pretty unfunny man, is made 10X better by his show (writers, format, whatever it is I'm not sure)...

I find it to be an entertaining show which gets a few laughs out of me but my sides ain't hurting when the credits start to roll.

That being said though, of all the things on television these days, the late-night format seems to be the most timeless, especially when compared to such Jurassic ideas as the half-hour evening news, and the formulaic sitcom.
The latenight shows are still around because they provide certain essential creature comforts most of us have grown accustomed to. People are always going to enjoy unwinding at the end of the day, whether they're occasionally chuckling or in hysterics . People also like being talked to, be it visceral or vicarious. And mainly, people are always going to enjoy the jokes, gags, celebrities, musicians, and random oddities those shows encapsulate.
Talking about not reinventing the wheel I guess.
I have laughed pretty uncontrollably at conan on numerous occasions. He can be pretty silly but he's also quick and witty and intelligent and thems winning qualities in my books!! PLUS he purred at me so he will always have a soft spot....
