selling Nazi records < selling raps that glamourize black-on-black crime

i was waiting for this. and don't get me wrong, i think you're contributing to the dissemination of dubious messages in both cases.

but given that white power singers are actually advocating hate, and that MOST rappers worth their salt are black CNN'ing it, i think there's a moral difference to be made. (but then again, an open-minded person could listen to white power music and learn what makes racists tick from it.)

with respect to the original question, we all do so many things in our everyday life that potentially have a negative/unjust impact in the world (whether we know it or not), that he may as well sell them. it's apathy and it's normal (but not necessarily right).

what, African American graemlins aren't down with Chuck D?

After a more in-depth read of the emails and ebay policy, it's become even more ridiculous - the auctions were taken down because "eBay does not permit Nazi items to be sold on our site. This means that items that bear any markings of the Nazi party are prohibited on eBay."

Try typing "nazi" into the search field, and see how this policy is applied!

are you really trying to make your point by comparing "white power singers" as a group to "MOST rappers"? also, are you paraphrasing barry goldwater? "extremism in the pursuit of "black CNN'ing" is no vice"

if anything, it seems to me that reselling these is just bad karma.
but do what you gotta do- i wouldn't hold it against you if you do.

out of curiosity, not sure if anyone has this knowledge - are the people buying Skrewdriver and No Remorse and the kind mostly paying $$$ as fans or is it people paying $$$ as collectors (but not advocates) of white power items?

  • ketanketan Warmly booming riffs 3,170 Posts
no. i thought the guy before was insinuating a comparison, so i addressed it.

i've never heard that goldwater quote, so i'm not sure how my point relates. how about i try: i don't there's anything wrong with artists (e.g. rappers) trying to honestly reflect their experiences/surroundings.

i DJ-ed an event for some german socialites that happened to be on passover who were direct descendants of the von habsburgs, known national socialist sympathizers who took it up the ass from hitler and willingly gave up jews. i didn't realize this when they contacted me to book it. this got back to my grandparents who were civil rights activists and former chairs of the anti-defamation league and i let's just say the look they gave me was not a good one.
i see both sides on this, making money off of a valuable record without attachment to the music it contains, free speech and so on, and alternatively the call to destroy such an item of hateful violent racist content. if you end up doing the latter i will come over and tape said destruction and put you on the news and that could bring you lots more business. we could hire models with dope heels to crush that shit on 5th street? sweet promotional opportunity?

  • Ebay is hypocritical on the issue but oh well, it's their site to run how they want. You SHOULD be able to sell these records but I'm sure you can get rid of them and turn a profit. Who cares if you're making money off of hate and ignorance? Isn't that how this country got where it is today? 'MERICA! WHOOO!

I think this is one of the more interesting dillemas to come up here in a while, adn this thread has been surprisingly free of stupidity.

Frankly, I think eBay is hypocritical, but that is there thing. File under: ebay is stupid- example 1,000,084.

Beyond that, it certainly seems to be up to each individual as to whether or not they are going to sell something like this. And, I don't have a problem with someone saying 1) no, I would not, or as Jonny has, 2) I am not a censor. I'll sell anything.

Which brings me to a libraraian friend of mine, who sides with Paychex. When he first started his job, he found himself sending some information to, what he felt, were reprehensible places. But, as a librarian, he came to the conclusion that his job was to disseminate information- and people could do with it what they will.

Though this is more capitalist than that venture, the same policy seems to be at work.

Sorry, dude...but you brought this on yourself by paying enough for those boxes of records to think that you had to sell the Screwdriver records in order to make good on the deal.

Nah man I paid pennies for this shit, rightfully.

I did just fine with regular old punk and metal records in my shop. Slayer, Ramones, Pistols, Motorhead, etc.

    THEN PLAESE TO DESTROY THEM!

  • The_NonThe_Non 5,691 Posts
Perhaps you'd be able to sell them if you unchecked the boxes to sell them in Germany and a few other European countries that do not allow the importation or sale of these types of materials with swastika logos and Nazi references in them. My dad has sold Nazi coinage collected by my grandfather (who was a coin collector, not a Nazi coin collector) by excluding certain countries from their sale.

If you live by this policy you might as well go ahead and sell anything, no matter how politically wrong it gets. Don't forget that Skrewdriver propagates violence and hatred and Ian Stuart was a serious nazi. They just use music (records) as a vehicle to get their views across.
I would definitely stay clear from selling stuff like this.

I just sell it. I sold a 45 by a teen group managed and produced by Dr. York for a large sum recently. For those who are too lazy to follow the link, he is a Black Supremacist and convicted Child Molester. I manage to sleep well at night.

I've got one of his records in my bins right now.
Couldn't find much about the disc when I researched it.
Didn't know a thing about him.

I can't see how selling this to some dumb skinhead is going to make anything worse (except his bank balance). Destroying records/books because you don't like what they say is, how do they say, Nazi-esque.

    b/w

Sell it to some self-righteous f*ck and let them destroy it. You'll get the cash and they'll feel they've "improved" the world.

for real, JP, the smartest would probably to relist them without tracklist and with a different title in the header. That is, if you still want to sell them on ebay...

destroying them in a public fashion is hardly the same as mass book-burnings or censorship. nobody here seems to be saying that those records shouldn't be produced and sold, because whether we like it or not they are.

this has nothing to do with johnny making the problem worse and everything to do with the fact that he is a jew who should not be profiting off the glorification of the murder of his people in any way unless it is to call attention to the fact that this sort of hate still exists and thrives in the shadows.

Aside from matters of volume/degree, it's exactly the same thing.

It's not remotely the same thing. An individual tossing some records that he owns is completely different from state action.
