Dude, you got your numbers all wrong. Being the 9th biggest party in Sweden is not small potatoes because they're not on a two party system. They are lead right now by a coalition of four parties, and that's just the largest group in the Parliament. There's like 8 parties or something represented in the Riksdag right now.

Aha! Somebody saying something beyond "because I said so."

Looks like there are 7, with the Green Party being the smallest with 19 seats (5% of votes).

By contrast the Swedish Social Democratic Party carries 130 seats and 35% of the votes.

It appears that since there are so many parties some of them vote in tandem or collaborate to accomplish goals.

    The inference you're making:

American Green party is a distraction, therefore Swedish Green party is a distraction

is about as reliable as this one:

Swedes are a small part of the American population, therefore Swedes are a small part of the Swedish population

Not exactly, but I do see your point about drawing an American comparison in a two party system versus in Sweden where there are 7 (voting).

That is what I was saying on the first; although the second I was simply saying that in comparison to the overall Internet-using population Sweden is very small.

You can't compare the American Green party to the Swedish Green party! The greens are a real deal in Sweden, where environmental concerns actually carry political clout. Greens hold 19 seats in the current Swedish parliament.

I do see your point. But even though they do hold seats (unlike in the US), it doesn't sound like they could do much without collaboration from several of the other parties (?) if I'm understanding it correctly.

I do see while it may be a small proportion of seats, it would be saying something to actually have a party seated based on copyright and piracy issues.

Thanks for sharing some real info

So.... Sweden has a political party based around piracy of digital media?

And this "political party" has a lot of followers?

Yep. although they're about more than just piracy - wiki/Pirate_party

And this "political party" has a lot of followers?

30,000 or so members. You could probably double the number to get the amount of 'followers', or possible voters.

Which seems like a lot to me, seeing as they're a "political party based around piracy of digital media".

Um... yeah, sort of. I'd guess the representatives would say their agenda is "modernizing copyright laws" or something like that. Like people say, they have a LOT of members for a Swedish political party (more than several of the parties in the current coalition goverment) but I doubt they'll receive a lot of votes. It's like the feminist party that ran for election in Sweden a few years ago. Important issues were discussed because of them, and bless them for that, but they didn't manage to break the 4 % barrier (you need 4 percent of votes to get seats in the riksdag). The agenda is too narrow.

Grafwritah compared to the discussion of legalizing drugs or gay marriage in the US. It's somewhere between those two in terms of actual influence in Sweden (but that's a guesstimation on my part).

And someone called the Pirate Bay guys internet dicks. They sure are. But people do like to hate on corporate dicks too, and if people in Sweden think laws are being enforced by huge evil American corporations, the blood starts to boil in their (ex)socialist veins.

That's interesting. When I lived in Sweden I saw pretty tolerant views about homosexuality and a huge anti-drug sentiment. Lots of anti-drug propaganda--'Try marijuana once and you'll be hooked!' type stuff. But that was high school. Are things still running like that?

Oh yeah. Gay marriage is legal in Sweden as of this summer (my friends are getting married FOR REAL - yeah!) but if you smoke weed once your eyes will sing the sad sad song, of how you lived so fast and died so young. Compare that to the attitude in a city as close to us as Copenhagen - it's crazy.

    No bias!

The judge and several members of the prosecution were members of two copyright lobby organizations. I don't know what Swedish legal ethics standards are, but in the US at minimum the Judge would need to recuse themselves.

Based on a kids game I believe. Where the last one standing wins the fight.

"A video posted on several online video sites depicts an incident during a Korean baseball game. After the batter is apparently hit by a pitch, the batter charges the mound, grabs his right leg in his hands and starts jumping up and down on one foot. The pitcher mimics the behavior, and within seconds the "brawl" encompasses almost every player on the field jumping up and down on one leg while holding onto their other leg. According to MLB.com, the incident took place during a celebrity baseball game in Korea and was supposed to be a parody of baseball brawls."

Damn. This is news to me, and pretty mindblowing.

The guy on the left looks like he should be swigging mead at the Prancing Pony circa 1200 AD. I know your life is online and not IRL, but man, step your grooming game up.

  • holy shit- what a development- the judge was a member of two anti-piracy groups and he didn;t recuse himself- serious conflict of interest that totally compromises the judgement.

those boys are not going to prison any time soon. i wonder if their attorney had this ace up his sleeve the whole time.

Are the standards the same in Sweden? It would make sense to me but if they were the same you'd think the judges would have better sense.

Like I said I don't know what Sweden's legal ethics code is so I have no idea if a judge has to recuse themself (RECUSE I!, nice one by the way) if there is a conflict of interest. Besides that, IANAL.

The NAGL for the judge that sat on the case doesn't mean that another judge wouldn't have handed down the same sentence. However you slice it, it still is

  • the point is the process has been tainted-not the a different judge might have handed down the exact same judgement.

it's not necessarily apparent bias that is the issue but one of perceived bias- the judge's actions sure reak of the latter. how embarrassing.

this is a black-eye for the swedish legal system.

In members, yes. In votes, no. I'm not sure they'd even pass the 4 percent barrier. Still, pretty funny.

Sweden's Pirate Party captures Euro seat

"STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Sweden's Pirate Party, striking a chord with voters who want more free content on the Internet, won a seat in the European Parliament, early results showed on Sunday.

The Pirate Party captured 7.1 percent of votes in Sweden in the Europe-wide ballot, enough to give it a single seat. The party wants to deregulate copyright, abolish the patent system and reduce surveillance on the Internet."

Think about that for a moment. No patents, no copyrights. So people who spend years and thousands or millions of dollars for research can immediately have their ideas pilfered by people who spent $0.

Net effect would be that most people/companies simply stop developing new technology and entertainment.

    Dumb.

Think about it, for any more than just 'a moment' and the net effect would be you'd realize what you just said was hyperbolic nonsense.
