Get an Apple computer? They stay clean.

  • Yeah, that a great suggestion... my unemployed ass is gonna run right out and get a Mac.

  • Try Malwarebytes , i run that with Comodo firewall , both free and i've never had any problems.

Avast has always been great for me.
Free, automatic updates, small footprint, no conflict toubles (like Norton).

But Ive found that some really nasty viruses even the best AVS can't get rid of.
For those you need to google the symptoms, find the right virus and follow steps
provided by Microsoft, Symantec etc to remove them manually.

Was wondering how long it would be until this response popped up. I'm sure he appreciates the advice, dick.

Cosign on malwarebytes. That big attack that was supposed to happen today didn't pop off, so most likely, its not that. Are you able to visit the AVG website, because supposedly it blocks all anti-virus sites.

I've also had good luck with the microsoft web-scanner thing, check their site...

Just reformat the computer. save all your important shit on a backup and just find a windows os installer or get one via torrents. Its good to fully format regularly anyways.

This sounds like it could be a good idea. How would I re-format though?

    What are steps involved?

BTW, thanks for all the suggestions.... much appreciated!

word of advice about re-installing....it can sometime be a lot more painfull than trying to just get rid of the virus.
especially the first time you do it, Im sure there'll be something that you forget to backup.
data, bookmarks, application settings etc etc. if you use a lot of apps with lots of specific settings, it can be very
time consuming to get them back to where you want them.
is there anything regarding your internet connection that you need to setup? or is just straight plug in and it works?
ie: you dont want to have to look for drivers or instructions or whatever online....before you can even get online.

  • Yeah, I hear what you're sayin... While re-formatting is a good idea in theory, I don't have any of the install discs it would require to replace files...

For now, I think I'll try out avast or something similar. Maybe that'll get things moving again.

also try smitfraudfix (you have to run it in safe mode to get the best results tho) and install spybot SD (the program always checks out whats goin on in the background of windows) plus activate the windows firewall or install some firewall program like zone alarm..then theres also the "malicious software removal tool" from microsoft..try that one first before re-formatting..might help
    download here :

Reformatting is seriously the only solution that will 100% work - unless your very familiar with the insides of windows, I wouldn't even bother using the various anti-spyware trojan software packages that are all around the place. Face it - Your infected - and Spyware / virus's etc are incredibly difficult to get rid of entirely, unless you know exactly how to do it - Even then, they are notorious for leaving all sorts of nasties inside your registry, which pop up again after you think you have solved the problem..

it's also good to reformat your harddrive evry once in a while - Consider it a spring clean - Your machine will run faster & thank you for it..

    To reformat:

    - First back up all your documents - anything you want to keep, because your going to completely wipe your system clean

    - Got the original Windows install CD? You will need it.. If not, someone suggested torrents, or perhaps borrow one

    - Insert CD, and restart your computer. An option will come up to book off the CD - Say yes!

    - You will then get a set of fairly self explanetry questions such as, Do you want to refort your drive? (yes), Which Drive? (c: make sure you select the largest partition), NTFS or FAT32? (NTFS), Full reformat or quick reformat? (Full)

    - Your on your way - Windows will do the rest..

    - Once windows is installed.. First thing before you do anything else is update windows (Start button > All Programs > Microsoft update). Windows will download some stuff, and want to re-boot. Once the machine starts up, head over to Microsoft updates again, and keep doing this untill your machine has downloaded ALL updates! Make sure you have auto updates selected.

    - Get your self a copy of Eset NOD 32 antivirus - this is by far one of the best, and is fairly small compared to the major brands (who hog heaps of system resources). Also get Spyware Blaster, and Spyware Guard - Update all of these once installed.

    - That's it! Your ready to hit the porn sites once again my friend!

  • Iron Monkey, I've just been reading through the posts and just to clear up a few things. Yes when it gets to your point definitely re-format, no matter what antivirus you put on now your computer is riddled with malware and it will be near impossible to remove without the reformat. I agree about downloading a new Windows OS if you haven't got yours but please don't use a torrent for it. Believe me that will make things worse, I used to do that but they'd alter some of the files in setup to include crap when you install it. If you need to download something like Vista or XP, join up on a download site where at least you know who is posting stuff up unlike P2P, and if they are caught with any viruses on their downloads they're removed from the forum. The one I use is rapidfind.org, you just need to register to see the forums.

    Any problems PM me.

    Downloading an OS?
You seriously don't know a single computer nerd who has like a gagillion copies of XP pro laying around?

You can download everything else you need, but for office and the OS, stick with disks.

A reformat will make your computer run much faster as well.
