Queenie Lyons. I also remember thinking the McCoys version wasn't bad.

yeah, Holmes, the McCoys came to mind, too! extra props to that band for doing it like "hang on, sloopy"

cant forget the original by Little Willie John

im really into Peggy Lee's version, too - the hit version. the rendition she does in that Youtube clip up above is too fast

Cosign. Was just listening to this yesterday in fact.

  • Little Willie John's is GOAT imo, although Alvin Robinson's is definitely a favorite.

    Man I hate this song.

The Jr Byles and Patty Drew version are great though, thanks.

    Great Great song.
Very few versions I don't like.

    Little Willie John!

Elvis did a version with just bass and finger snaps, right?

Neville Brothers do a real good group harmony version on a live lp.

I like La Lupe, but I'm not sure that counts as a Fever cover.

I like La Lupe, but I'm not sure that counts as a Fever cover.

    why not?

IIRC, all she did was sing the song in a foreign language - that dont change nothin

It does switch up half way through to something not resembling Fever, but I say it still counts.

  • You know what is awesome, listening to LWJ's version on 78.

More than just change the language, but I was just kidding anyway.

Yeah, I don't even think I've played my copy that often, but I have a vague recollection of it being totally en espanol...first few bars sounded predictable, so I didn't make it to the end.

    HONORABLE MENTION:
Joe Tex's answer song "Pneumonia." Tex claimed to have partially cowritten "Fever" - it was supposedly his idea to give it a rhythm similar to "Sixteen Tons." He didn't get a co-writers credit, and then King Records released his 45 at the same time as "Fever," and guess whose record sold the most?

So a pissed-off Tex recorded and released "Pneumonia," a NASTY answer song - "put your cotton-pickin' hands on me, I'm gonna hit you with this rocking chair! You got PNEUMONIA..."

oh shit, forgot - Dee Clark did a killer version, slowed down and played in this ominous minor key...
