yeah, as you may have guessed, I disagree with the "better-than-Atlantic" sentiment 200%, but other than that..."It's A Shame" - GREAT SONG!!

Great song, the guitar hook gets me every time. How big a role did Stevie Wonder have in writing it?

    EL OH EL

Either way it goes, Kool G, OG or Monie

Not mad at Monie. That's how I discovered the Spinners.

    Real talk.

And Pickwick - it's not like I dislike their Atlantic output ("I'll Be Around" is hard to deny) but man, "It's a Shame" is just so next level to me.

It's a shame ticks pretty much every box for me. I'm a sucker for any song where the lead vocalist goes all out and the notes Cameron hits in the chorus are the mutts nuts. Funnily enough I never knew it was a Stevie song growing up but it's blidingly obvious really. Undoubtedly one on my favourite uptempo soul songs of all time.

Totally off topic but the Stevie song Cameron did after he left the Spinners is a great track too.

Great, great song! I really like the Positive Express version as well.

That Alton Ellis version is blowing my mind right now.

on all counts. A truly great record, co written with Syreeta and another blind singer, Lee Garrett (who made some great 45s in Philly in the 60s).

  • That Alton cover is nice but this reggae Spinners cover is better (not to threadjack):

Alton kills it, no doubt but dude, it's not outdoing the OG!

I've never not loved this song. It has to be said, also, that the drums (Pistol Allen? Uriel Jones?) are unfuckingreal. I love Atlantic-era Spinners to the bone, but It's A Shame is something else.

Picked up the LP this last weekend thanks to this thread.

  • thanks to all that posted in this thread - i was on this (even though i have owned and loved the alton ellis version for years), and that has now been righted. A NM copy of the 45 is on it's way as we speak.

  • I personally dig the Alton Ellis version more.

you must have a different Spinners "It's a Shame" 7" than me...because I totally disagree...original kills this (instrumental or vocals)...imo
