Goodfellas vs Casino

Last night at 1am, after having been woken up 6 times by our children for various ailments including 'boredom', my wife and I debated the various merits of the two movies. She is definitely in the Goodfellas camp, for all the obvious reasons: More interesting plot; exploration of the disintegrating mob world, Pesci's role is bigger/better, better music. I have been watching Casino a lot and I gotta say that I am tilting in that direction. Better setting (the 70s Vegas scene is insane), Deniro role is so soulful and sad, Sharon Stone is great a whore sleaze bag and Pesci has the greatest scenes (head in the vice). I get that Casino is essentially a rip off of Goodfellas but it's really f*cking good, maybe better. What does the SS massive say?b, 21b, 21

Casino? This is like Lenny Kravitz vs the 70s.

font class="post"1b, 21b, 21Cripes.b, 21b, 21Goodfellas is untouchable imo.b, 21b, 21As much as I love Scorsese, he leaves a lot to be desired as far as his female characters are concerned (disclaimer: I haven't seen that Michelle Pfieffer period piece or anything after Casino). The one thing I really liked about Casino is that Stone is a three-dimensional character whose existence is not shadowed/defined by the male characters. I may need reminding of others, but she is his strongest female character and despite much clowning, Stone is a pretty good actor and probbaly the only who could hold her own (at that time) amongst the rest of that cast.b, 21b, 21Casino has wonderful opening credits and amazing outfits as well.

Casino is an amazing movie. Fantastic, remarkable, amazing. So good.b, 21b, 21But Goodfellas is Goodfellas.

  • I hadn't thought abotu Casino in a while. But it's a great film. Can't fusk with Goodfellas. But Casino is terrific. I love that scene where he introduces the holy of holies, the place where they count the money and give the guy his briefcase. And then later, show how everyone is skimming.

If he had never made "Goodfellas, "Casino" would probably have seemed more genius but I can never shake the "this is Goodfellas Pt. 2" feeling. That said, both are good.

damn you workblocking!it's the trailer from "alice dosen't live here anymore".

  • Depends on my mood. Goodfellas is an amazing film, perfect almost but Casino has a lot more showmanship. However, as good as Casino is it's overlong and a bit of a chore to watch if you've already seen it a few times.

font class="post"1b, 21b, 21AK! I am an idiot for forgetting that one - such a great movie. b, 21Forgot he made that one.b, 21I am doubly an idiot because I actually carry around a still from that movie because I love Burstyn's haircut....but I am getting off-track.b, 21b, 21I guess you could argue Bernhard's character in King of Comedy, too...but she and the ladies of After Hours are a little too silly if you know what I mean.

font class="post"1b, 21b, 21My bad I should have said junkie whore con artist. The thing about these movies is that everyone is bad. I think you put it best in saying that she is her own fully developed person, albeit a fucked up person. The Pfeiffer movie is not very good but might be worth watching again to look at his characterization of women, who are the gangsters in that movie.
