font class="post"1b, 21b, 21Ha. For real though - I think once WP backed off from trying to do complete discographies, the record pron got less interesting. I'm not interested in seeing 20 "selections." I want all or nothing!

  • was there a mix-up on the cover for the latest issue??? swear i saw an alton ellis pic w/ "jimmy cliff" written on it...

When an interviewee lists his top ten is one of my favorite parts, yes that Shuggie Otis interview was good. There was a lot he wasn't squealin' or fussin up to bout all the trouble he was gettin into, there is more to that story about Shuggie, maybe Oliver Wang can play P.I. on that one in the future.

font class="post"1b, 21b, 21And besides, there was a lot he didn't confess, but then there was a lot that he did, so what more could you want? Myself, I haven't seen very many interviews with the man; the Chicago Reader did a respectable piece on him when Inspiration Information was reissued, and then there were those newsletters that Epic (Shuggie's old label) used to print on the innersleeves of their albums. But,the Wax Poetics piece is the most informative Shuggie tale to date. Asking for more would be kinda petty.b, 21b, 21(Although if there IS more, I'd like to see...)

But lately it's become sort of boring. b, 21There used to be a wider range of topics covered, and things were keep more interesting. Like they used to have a different artist do the cover every month, and the overall design was interesting. But lately it's become sort of boring and predictable. Are the original people still involved?b, 21b, 21I still buy it, but it's definitely had some better issues.

  • all the original people are still there and working hard...respect your opinion but I think they have their own reasons for the 'new' direction....honestly, i am feeling it the new design and topics covered i believe it it is a wider range of topics.b, 21b, 21amir

font class="post"1b, 21b, 21I still like the mag, but I think the point about the covers has some validity. I think it's good that they get the brand out there and are consistent for awhile with the look, but at some point I think it would do them well to spread their wings again, cover art-wise. I would say after this year they would really run the risk of having the mag take on TOO much of a consistent look, and end up all loking the same.

He was one of the more prominent & successful black rock styled guitarists of the 70s. I think he did a lot to kick the Isleys back into validity in the 70s.

font class="post"1b, 21b, 21I don't like Elvis, but I learned something from the article. I think that issue was trying to stay close to bands who had a "soul" type feel to their rock side or vice versa, which was stated in the issue. I think the magazine is a sweet piece of reading material.

  • Yes, I agree that Ernie Isley belongs in a rock discussion. A lot of people forget (or never knew) that funk borrowed quite a bit from rock. And if you GOTTA talk about 1970's guitarists who were inspired by Hendrix, then Isley is a hell of a lot more listenable than Robin Trower. Or Frank Marino.b, 21b, 21As far as the WP "rock issue," I thought it may have been a little too broad. You know like when Soul Strut has a thread on our fave rock records, and the albums mentioned have hardly anything in common because the field is so vast? You'll see Van Halen followed by Kraftwerk next to the Mamas & the Papas...that's kinda what the Wax Poetics' tribute to rock kinda reminded me of.b, 21b, 21But just like those Soul Strut threads, that issue was a good read!

It's a music magazine at the end of the day, and it is hands down better than any other music magazine that I can think of. There are just some music obsessives that will never be pleased.b, 21b, 21I don't have a problem at all with the covers, as a matter of fact the Herbie cover was my favorite cover ever.
