Putting aside the ???minor detail that absolutely no local businesses were damaged (only multinational banks, the courts and the police station), these supposed ???shop owners??? and ???respectful citizens??? were depicted in media in their balaclavas, holding knives! There was an unbelievable joint police-fascist operation in Patras today and they are trying to cover it up and to claim the public has turned against the demonstrators.

I wouldnt be too harsh on 'socialist' if I were you guys especially since the US has pretty much become a socialist state with all the bail outs and what not.... United Socialist of America??? b, 21 b, 21Keep cracking your cliched jokes, but seriously...I was expecting a little more originality from SS finest keyboard comedians... can we get some new material other than the same old disses....b, 21b, 21And for those who are actually interested in facts.... b, 21b, 21"b, 21With anger towards the police compounded by frustration towards conservative Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, thousands of activists then gathered in downtown Athens in mid-morning to demand that the government stand down.b, 21b, 21"Sack Karamanlis,'' chanted the protesters, saying he headed a "Killing state'', as the largest group, uniting students and teachers, marched towards the national parliament building.b, 21b, 21"This death was the catalyst for many grievances,'' said 18-year-old farming student George Tzouvelekis, one of the protesters.b, 21b, 21"Look how the banks are being attacked, because they have refused to lower interest rates amid the economic crisis.... Everybody is fed up.''b, 21b, 21With the general strike hitting banks, public transport and flights in and out of the country, the wider economic damage from the unrest was now compounding the loss to property from outbreaks of looting.b, 21b, 21b, 21Sixteen Greeks and 25 migrants were arrested during clashes and looting in the streets around the Athens Polytechnic overnight, which has been occupied by protesters since Sunday. Educational establishments offer legal sanctuary in a constitutional legacy of the backlash against 1970s military dictatorship.b, 21b, 21Demonstrators holed up in the symbolic university - at the heart of 1973 student protests which helped trigger the dictatorship's downfall - set fire to surrounding streets as firebombs rained down on security forces outside.b, 21b, 21Some of the worst of the violence was in Patras, with at least 500 protesters laying siege to the police headquarters throughout the evening and scores continuing to goad security forces well into the middle of the night.b, 21b, 21The general strike, called before the death of Grigoropoulos, brought public transport, schools, banks and most administrative offices to a halt. Airlines cancelled dozens of internal and international flights.b, 21b, 21In a televised address, Mr Karamanlis pledged up to ???10,000($19,680) to stricken businesses, a tax freeze and government-guaranteed loans to rebuild buildings and property burnt in the troubles.b, 21b, 21"The government is determined to consolidate the feeling of public safety and to help businesses get back on their feet," Mr Karamanlis said.b, 21b, 21Despite the turmoil, Mr Karamanlis's office said he would attend a European Union summit in Brussels this week. The opposition has demanded that the government resign and the demonstrators marching on parliament chanted "Sack Karamanlis".

font class="post"1b, 21b, 21Jesus, would you shut the F*ck up already? You're sounding painfully ignorant.b, 21b, 21Of course LokoOne isn't the most eloquent guy and his support for violent protests is a bit much, but you haven't demonstrated any knowledge of what's going on over there. At least he understands the massive frustration felt by the citizens of Greece. You, on the other hand, seem completely content to push aside the fully legitimate frustrations of students and professors -- and citizens in general -- with the sweep of your hand. Again, painfully ignorant.

  • I'm not trying to discount the "massive frustration", but thousands of anarchists can assemble in this country and bash Starbucks windows and it's not a big thing. Why all this bla bla bla?b, 21b, 21The strike is indeed crippling, but I fail to understand how we should somehow take a great lesson (let alone be ashamed or inspired) by these events.b, 21b, 21For 8 years, hundreds of thousands of protesters gathered in protest of our corrupt government... sometimes resorting to violence. b, 21b, 21In the end, we elected a Black, Liberal President. Whether this will change things drastically is up in the air... but I have a hard time taking seriously these cats who want to claim moral superiority because they've gathered up some college students who throw bricks through windows.
