...is this insane? My girl and I are looking to take a trip that week and I suggested that if Obama wins, why not go to the inauguration? But, that might be a crazy idea base on hotel availability and just trying to get around....would it be a pain in the ass?

  • no, not really. downtown would suck, that's about it. i don't think you'd care to go shopping at urban outfitters and eat a meal with the wife at chipotle IN CHINATOWN./b1 the metro will probably be a little more packed with extra security, but out-of-towners never touch the bus system so you'd be good on that. b, 21b, 21downtown TEH REST OF DCb, 21b, 21really... it won't be that much of a hassle. go for it if it really means something to you.

If you're searching for hotels, I suggest the a href="http://carlylesuites-px.trvlclick.com/accommodations-amenities/index.cfm" target="_blank"1Carlyle Suites Hotel/a1 in Dupont Circle. Close enough to downtown--but far enough away that you're not in the middle of everything--and in a beautiful neighborhood.b,121Plus, Neville C.'s a href="http://www.somrecordsdc.com" target="_blank"1record store/a1 is just 3 blocks away.

font class="post"1b,121b,121b,121chinatwon bus, $35 roundtrip. get picked up on east broadway by the bridge, then dropped off on i street between 7th & 6th which is a block away from the chinatwon metro. when driving the whip in NYC isn't of the essence [like 25% of the time] i always take the chinatwon bus.b, 21b, 21i might be rollin back to DC for this one too, so [everyone] ho-llar.

I believe tickets for inaguration are pretty tough to get. I think it's something like, 'do you know anyone that works on the hill?' But it'd be worth being on Pennsylvania Ave. as he goes up to the White House and being in the city.b, 21b, 21If peeps are rolling through and something is organized...I'm down to meet up. I also got a couch of someone needs a place to crash.b,121b,121b,121b,121...just talked to a friend who works on Capitol Hill. If you don't know someone that works there to hook you up, you're best bet is to "ask their elected representative."

  • I was here for Clinton's first inauguration in 1992 and the whole city was buzzing. On the mall they had two days of free concerts set up in large tents. I saw Etta James, Eddie Palmieri, Buckwheat Zydeco, and Chaka Khan among others. Later at the 9:30 Club the Doug Sahm, Freddy Fender and Flaco Jimenez from the Texas Tornadoes showed up and jammed with Los Lobos which was one of the most memorable shows I've ever seen. There will also be a bunch of inaugural balls which are highly coveted invites. b,121Come by my shop, it'll have the "Black President" LP in the window.

I'll try and get some more details and dates.b,121I was there last night and U Street was going off. Thousands of folks in the streets, drummers, fireworks, bus drivers honking their horns and general jubilation. My wife can't talk today and has a bruised right hand from high fiving too many folks. The fact that the corner of 14th and U is where the riots started in '68 made it all that much more special. What a night!
