font class="post"1b,121b,121No, we do not. We owe it to ourselves, regardless of the fact of the benefit to the rest of the world.

  • This is something I wrote earlier today on the Yes We Can thread. As a McCain voter I will sayb,121b,121the thought of Obama winning on a deep level makes me very proud. I think Obama is going to win and on November 5, it really will be a new day. A more perfect day, a more perfect union. I'm not really where I was in '06 or '04, when I thought Kerry was going to win. I am not reaching for my Bushmills. I'm not giving hippies the stink eye on my way to the mocha hut. I'm not blasting Heart's Crazy on You on my ipod. No this year, I have accepted the reality of the matter. I am wary of all the democrats that will be running the federal government. But hey, FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT. Congratulations America. Good for us. I'm going for a run. I got that new Saadiq record on the ipod. I'm kind of mellow. Maybe he will make weed legal.

Then why would you not vote for him, Eli? What are the issues that trump what you're saying would be this "better day?" I really don't understand?

font class="post"1b,121b,121It's the fact that he is a Democrat and will appoint Democrats to run the government. Here's the thing. I don't think it will be a better day for a substantive political reason. I lean right and would prefer as a citizen for the government to be smaller, for our nation to work to remake the international system instead of adhering to a flawed and broken United Nations as it is, for the market to play a bigger and not lesser role in the healthcare industry. But the fact that our nation--founded on the labor of black slaves--would elect a black president is compelling for its own symbolic reasons. It's too soon to say if this is the last corrective to the shameful portion of our national legacy. But wow. That really is important. I can appreciate, welcome and praise how Obama's election is a triumph over white supremacy, and still cast a vote for McCain because I prefer conservative government. b,121b,121It's fair to say that Goldwater voters in 1964 were choosing the candidate who opposed giving blacks equality under the law. In that respect Goldwater voters were at least indirectly racist. But I don't think McCain is a vote for white supremacy. It's a vote for a conservative war hero, who opposed his party on torture, campaign finance and Iraq war strategy. A man who helped to save Iraq by persuading his own party to support the surge and new counterinsurgency strategy. Someone who has opposed government waste for his entire career and helped open diplomatic relations with Vietnam--a regime founded by the men who tortured him. If the GOP had nominated Romney or Huckabee, I would be voting for Obama. But they nominated a man I have respected since I came to Washington. So I am for McCain, but embracing the fact (if all polls are correct) that my president is black (even though I don't own a blue Lamborghini).

So what you're saying is that you'd rather be on the wrong side of history just for the sake of political pragmatism? b, 21b, 21Look V: your candidate is going to lose tomorrow. You know this; you've said as much. So why not embrace what you already know in your heart - an Obama victory is meaningful in a way that goes beyond what bureaucrats get appointed to what under-secretary position. I'm not saying the latter is irrelevant but F*ck it - what's the more important principle to follow at this moment in American history? b, 21b, 21I mean whatever: vote for McCain. Write in Bozo. I just think you've made a rather compelling argument for voting for Obama that you're simultaneously rejecting for what seems to be a rather insignificant reason. If you feel that strongly about it, make sure your local congressperson or senator is Republican.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Ask yourself if the race was between Michael Steele or Colin Powell and I don't know (fill in white Dem you respect. the ghost of Paul Wellstone), would you just vote for the Republican because you understood that the fact of a black president was important for symbolic reasons, even though on policy you disagreed. It's not such an easy call, is it? What's more, being conservative, according to William F. Buckley is to stand athwart history, yelling, "stop." On this matter, I welcome the history. But I can't bring myself to vote a democrat. Not after the last two years.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Vs. the last 8? b, 21b, 21I don't think your analogy above holds. A Black Republican comes loaded with extra baggage that would make such a candidate quite different from Obama. But fine, I hear your point.
