I talked to a friend today and asked him if he was gonna vote. He said "naw, California's electoral college is voting democrat so it won't matter if I vote or not. The electoral college decides.". He went on to say if the popular vote truly mattered, Gore would have won in '00.b,121b, 21I understand what he's saying, but how many other people are thinking the same thing? And how right is dude really?

font class="post"1b,121b, 21If the presidential election is all the guy cares about, then Obama should be OK without him in California, which is not a competitive state for McCain. Some of us think that local and statewide offices and ballot measures matter though.

I know, I know...b,121b, 21It's his prerogative (he can do what he wanna doooo), but if a big enough group of people are thinking "F*ck it, he'll be aiiiiight", that can't be good.

CA's popular can add to his record landslide numbers. b,1214) If you don't vote you can't bitch. It wont take you more than an hour to read it in the morning and then stop at the polls on your way to work. b,1216) You can tell your grandkids you were part of history.b,1217) Some polling places give out cool I Voted stickers just like when you got a star in kindergarten.

font class="post"1b,121b, 21Your boy sounds unclear on how voting works. b,121b, 21The national popular vote doesn't mean as much as the electoral vote. But a STATE'S popular vote is absolutely important. You can't win electoral votes for a state if you lose the popular vote in the state.

font class="post"1b,121b, 21But he's affected by the laws passed whether or not he votes, so he does have a right to complain.

Another thing you might want to mention to your friend is that those who vote get the $$$$. b, 21b, 21The largest voting block is seniors. Not because there are more seniors, but because they vote in larger percentage than any one else. b, 21b, 21They are also receive the largest share of non-defense tax dollars. It doesn't matter if you are rich or poor, if you are old receive the both socialized medicine and retirement as well as many other government benefits. Why? Because they vote. Full Stop.b, 21b, 21Why tax cuts for the rich? The rich vote in larger percentages than the poor. b, 21b, 21Why so much money for ethanol? Iowa is the first primary state. b, 21b, 21There is a lot of power in voting. b, 21b, 21If pot heads voted in the same percentage as seniors pot would be free and government subsidized.

font class="post"1b,121b, 21And lobby. And bankroll campaigns. And have the money to run for office. And...

  • #1 - the larger Obama's lead, the bigger the mandate. b, 21b, 21#2 - California is not quite close, but I read some early voting stats that were pretty close.b, 21b, 21Everyone needs to vote if they give a shit.

There really isn't an excuse not to vote.b, 21b, 21Question: With early voting, are they going to count those numbers afterwards like absentee ballots or with the election day votes?

font class="post"1b,121b, 21It will be different state by state and county by county. Yet another way that our country fails to run fair and open elections.

The Electoral College exists because our founding fathers did not trust an angry mob. I've got to say I agree with them on that. Does that make it right? I have no idea. b, 21b, 21It should be noted again that if we didn't have one we wouldn't have had eight years of G Dubb.
