I believe Alston used that red label for everything from late '71 through '75, when they stopped being distributed by Atlantic.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Betty Wright's Baby Sitter from 1972 is on both a green & red label though.

  • its probably the multiple pressing plant reason...not something to worry about, that Betty Wright 45 is a $1 record whatever the color

  • A great number of Alston 45s were first released in Miami (local issues, like the BW on the right) before they got national distribution via Atlantic. Most of the harder Alston titles are local issue only, and often share numbers with more common titles on the label. b,121b,121Example:b,1214574 J.P. Robinson "You Can Be A Lady/ Love Is Not A Stranger" localb,1214574 Clarence Reid "Send Me Back My Money/ Nobody But You Babe" national

font class="post"1b,121That was why it got me thinking, but.....b,121Now I'm wondering if I've seen an Atlantic 45 that actually says "promo" on it, the white with red writing usually says something like "plug side" I think, but the earlier stuff ("white with black") doesn't say it, I always just assumed it was the case. Like this one:b,121 img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/holmes/IMG_0771.jpg"1

My only question is whether this thread is more nerdy than pointless, or more pointless than nerdy.

i think i know who you're talking about. i went to one of their shows this summerb,121he did one half of the show as clarence reid, then changed and came back as blowfly. b,121i thought the band was kinda bleh but it was still cool to see dude perform live for the first (and most likely last) time in my life..b,121b,121i thought it was kinda weird for him to say shit like that but if you're right about it coming from this other dude it all makes sense to me..

Some of the red alston pressings seem like heavy duty vinyl.

font class="post"1b,121b, 21Actually, the red-labeled Alstons are indeed distributed by Atlantic, and the thickness/process cannot be post-75. The mystery continues. Perhaps they were immediate second-pressings or West-coast issues for Atlantic-distributed hits.b,121b, 21The font on the local Alston labels is pretty easy to spot. That, plus Miss Hot Stuff/Mr. Hot Stuff never had Atlantic distribution (damn it).
