Wow. Lunacy?b,121b,121Never before. Not for Roosevelt in 1936 or 1940. Not for Johnson in 1964. Not for Clinton in 1996. 161 years and 40 elections, and the streak is broken. What would Joseph Medill say? This is huge for Chicago.

  • Very cool, and when it's all over (and I think there will be more unlikely endorsements coming), McCain can thank his selection of Sarah Palin.

b,121b,121For non-Chicagoans...I'm assuming this is a big deal b/c the Tribune typically endorses Republicans?

I'll put it this way: the only non-GOP members the Tribune has endorsed have been Horace Greeley, Independent, in 1872, and Teddy Roosevelt, Progressive Party, in 1912. Like I noted, the Trib has not endorsed a Democrat over the span of their 161 years. The endorsement itself (linked above), briefly details the history of probably the most conservative major newspaper in the nation's history. It's very well written, and is worth the time it takes to read it.

b,121b,121For real - I've read so many pieces by conservatives (and non) about the death of the contemporary conservative movement - and in particular, the failings of the GOP, you wonder who exactly hasn't gotten the memo on this and how long it will take the GOP to fix itself. b,121b,121I don't think we're even seeing the nadir of their fracturing, dissolution and in-fighting. It's going to get so much uglier.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Libertarians made a serious but ultimately futile push to snag GOP defectors.

Oh, I don't see a dissolution or complete self-destruction. But I think there will have to be a massive internal reorganization to reconstitute a liable coalition. b,121b,121Then again, the Dems haven't seemed terribly well-organized; they've made gains at the expense of their opponents because the latter have fucked up so badly that they're the default alternative. b,121b,121Rah rah for the 2 party system.

  • if conrad black and david radler weren't in jail and still running that paper there is no chance that endorsement would have happened. b,121b,121word is colin powell may come out for him next...

b,121b,121Oh, the Trib was one of Conrad Black's papers? Funny, because I read that piece and thought that the British equivalent would perhaps be the Daily Telegraph (another part of Black's empire, or at least it was) coming out in support of Ken Livingstone as Prime Minister. Not that it's likely he'd ever get into such a position, but if you know much about British politics and the role the media plays in it, you'd see my pointb,121b,121/font1Quote:/font1h,121b,121word is colin powell may come out for him next... b,121b,121h,121b,121b,121Damn. Even funnier than the photo is the description of the event where it was taken (in London) as "celebrating African-American music and fashion". b,121b,121b,121b,121I know it's Fox and all, but, for the last time, black British people are not "African-American". You'd think, with all the fearless flying-in-the-face-of-political-correctness that they've made their trademark, Fox would be the last ones to show any concern over semantics.b,121b,121It's bizarre - when my girlfriend worked in Nashville about seven years ago, she was asked on two separate occasions and in all seriousness; "do they have black people in England?" She was kind of offended by it, until I pointed out that, with very few exceptions, you generally don't see or hear black people speaking with non-American accents in the US media. I guess that, in the eyes of some, that's the same as not existing at all.

The L.A. Times has also backed Obama, their 1st presidentialb,121endorsement since 1972, and first backing of a Democrat ever.

They even asked readers to weigh in on who the paper should endorse; nice perspective on why that's a bad idea here. b,121b,121I am glad the Tribune endorsed Obama, no doubt, but I feel that it no longer means anything, party for newspaper endorsements in general and particularly in the case of the Tribune.b,121b,121Also, Conrad and Them owned the Chicago Sun-Times, not the Trib.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Yeah I think it's pretty clear that they have favored him over McCain ever since Palin entered the picture- they've been very critical of her. The Economist has generally held that Obama's plans for the recession are better, although obviously they have been critical of his protectionist rhetoric (that has been toned down markedly since the primaries). They side with Obama on pretty much every issue that isn't economics related, but have consistently held that both candidates would be alright.
