  • as obama said this morning, don't forget what happened in New Hampshire! every poll had him trouncing hillary.b,121b,121moreover, the media has a financial incentive to keep the race close so i expect a huge slant towards mccain in the next few weeks. you will less stories about obama's 14 point lead (nyt poll), and more baseless stories about the mccain comeback, even if its complete fiction.b,121b,121btw, i saw signs of this bs today with this nonsense about joe the plumber, and whether he speaks for the middle class. the guy is a bum without a plumber's license who gratuitously asked obama about buying a business he has no shot of owning, , just to make a point about a 3% tax raise on 2% of small businesses!!! b,121b,121and i still am astounded that the press thinks mccain's "i'm not george bush" line was the most memorable of the night. it was completely retarded. his policies are identical to bush!! obama gave him credit for speaking out against torture...why????? mccain voted against the torture bill. the guy is bush 2.0. b,121b,121b,121

Front-runner Obama cautions against overconfidence[/b]b,121b,121Obama to supporters: Don't get 'cocky'b,121b,121(CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama cautioned supporters Thursday morning against becoming complacent during the final days leading up to the election, noting he lost the New Hampshire primary despite a lead in the polls.b,121b,121b,121After debating Sen. John McCain, Sen. Barack Obama says there's still plenty of campaigning to be done.b,121b,121 "For those of you who are feeling giddy or cocky and think this is all set, I just [have] two words for you: New Hampshire," the Democratic presidential nominee said during a fundraiser breakfast in New York. "You know I've been in these positions before where we were favored and the press starts getting carried away and we end up getting spanked. And so that's another good lesson that Hillary Clinton taught me."b,121b,121About 10 hours after debating Sen. John McCain, Obama urged top campaign contributors at the Metropolitan Club in Manhattan to not be overconfident, despite leading in a number of national polls.b,121b,121A CNN Poll of Polls calculated Wednesday showed him leading 51 percent to 42 percent. b,121b,121"We've got 19 days," Obama said. "We're going to have to work absolutely as hard as we've ever worked in our lives in order to just to get to the start of what is going to be a very difficult and very challenging but ultimately a very fulfilling four years where we can get this country back on track."b,121b,121Obama is scheduled to attend a rally in Londonderry, New Hampshire, a state that is increasingly trending to his advantage. b,121b,121 b,121Obama and McCain are scheduled to speak Thursday night at the Alfred E. Smith dinner, a political tradition that dates back to 1945. It honors the first Catholic ever nominated for president and was begun by Francis J. Spellman, the archbishop of New York's Roman Catholic Archdiocese at the time.b,121b,121Before the dinner, McCain is expected to attend a rally in Downington, Pennsylvania, where the most recent CNN Poll of Polls shows him trailing Obama 52 percent to 40 percent. b,121b,121The Republican presidential nominee is also expected to appear on the "Late Show with David Letterman," after canceling an earlier appearance, which left the host fuming. b,121b,121Also Thursday, McCain's running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, sounded a note of triumph about Wednesday's presidential debate while campaigning in Bangor, Maine. b,121b,121"They [Obama and Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden] look to the past because they'd rather run against the current administration, it sounds like, and that strategy though, thankfully, it's really starting to wear very very thin," Palin said. "As John McCain reminded Barack Obama last night, if he wanted to run against George Bush, he had his chance four years ago. This year, the name on the ballot is John McCain -- and America knows that John McCain is his own man, he is the maverick."b,121b,121Though Maine has trended Democratic for nearly two decades, the McCain campaign is making a push in the state's rural 2nd Congressional District, which is allotted one electoral vote independent of how the state votes at large. Despite the McCain camp's efforts, the Republican National Committee has stopped running advertisements in the state.b,121b,121Palin will later travel to Elon and Greensboro, North Carolina.b,121b,121Biden is traveling to Los Angeles, California, taping appearances on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and the "Ellen Degeneres Show."b,121b,121The latest polls show Obama leading nationwide as well as in key battleground states, including Virginia, which switched from a tossup state to a state leaning toward him on CNN's new Electoral College Map. See how the CNN electoral map is changing ??b,121b,121On the map, Virginia's 13 electoral votes would put Obama over the 270 electoral-vote threshold needed to win the White House.b,121b,121The new map shows Obama with 277 electoral votes and McCain amassing 174 electoral votes, leaving 87 electoral votes still up for grabs in several states.b,121b,121"Virginia hasn't gone Democratic in 44 years," said Alan Silverleib, CNN senior political researcher. "But a number of polls -- including our own -- now show Obama up double digits there. And, as the map shows, if Obama holds that lead, it may be enough to put him into the White House."b,121b,121"Conversely, McCain really can't afford to lose Virginia's 13 electoral votes. That state is a key part of the Republican electoral coalition," Silverleib added.b,121b,121b,121CNN also switched North Dakota from a safe McCain state to one leaning toward McCain, and New Jersey from leaning toward Obama to safely for Obama. Neither of those moves affected the overall electoral vote count in the CNN estimate.b,121b,121"This is not good news for John McCain. He's heading in the wrong direction at a time when he needs to be gaining electoral votes, not losing them," said CNN political editor Mark Preston. "But he's been left for dead before and has come roaring back. This election is not over yet."

b,121b,121h,121b,121b,121Actually, both 538 and NYTimes have called into question just how big this under-representation may be. They're currently predicting that it's 2-3 point undercount which is decent but not like a tidal wave. Most polls have overweighted youth responses on account of the landline thing but it's not a precise science. b,121b,121h,121b,121b,121That seems reasonable to me. I imagine the Bradley effect will fall within the same range. b,121b,121h,121b,121no. everyone studying this seems equally convinced that the bradley effect disappeared sometime in the mid-90s

b,121b,121b,121Yesterday at work I wondered aloud how dinosaur meat would have tasted. One of my coworkers commented that "they" must have eaten dinosaur, so it must taste alright. I asked if by "they" she meant other dinosaurs, and she replied, "No, the cavemen!"b,121b,121Incredulous, I asked two more employees if they thought cavemen were around at the same time as dinosaurs and they both thought it that was a likely possibility. The only other person besides me who thought that was disturbing was a recent French immigrant.b,121b,121So, to answer your question, we may live in the same country as these people, but we're in a very different reality.

One presidential candidate being assassinated over 300+ years of presidential elections is not "plausible." I believe the word would be "exceptional." b,121b,121As for massive vote tampering - assuming FL and OH were the result of vote tampering, we're talking about races in KEY swing states (i.e. the votes of that state alone would have swung the election) that had narrow margins all along, thereby helping to hide tampering under the appearance of a close race that was lost at the end. b,121b,121Obama, at this point, can LOSE OH and FL and still win. He could lose a slew of "swing states" and still win. Why? Because he's way ahead in all the states Kerry won in 2004 PLUS several key states Kerry lost that same year. b,121b,121So "massive voting fraud" would have to be more than tipping over a few thousand votes in FL. They'd have to make up tens of thousands of votes in several states and they may not have the benefit of close races to hide tampering. If Obama is up by 10 and loses by 1 in four states? That's going to look really really suspicious, far more so than OH and FL '04.

b,121b,121Real talk, Keith. b,121b,121On Tuesday David Gregory was on MSNBC talking about McCain's comeback, using these polls:b,121b,121 b,121b,121b,121Over two weeks old! Also, there was a lot of nervous laughter on CNN last night to when they asked David Gergen whats McCain's next move is and his answer was "damned if I know." The elephant in the room for these guys is that they can say anything but "it's over." I think all this blame the media stuff is kinda played out, but it really is pretty transparent at this point, you just have to take it all with a grain of salt. b,121b,121That said, talking about how its over right now is really nagl. Anything could come out in the next 19 days, and people NEED to feel that sense of urgency regardless of what polls say.

b,121b,121No one talks about this but it is the truth. I was talking to my dad the other day about the election and he said, "I just hope he lives to become President." b,121b,121I would like to see some coverage of an Obama rally in the yay area and see how many people support I don't know the shining path or Hugo Chavez. I remember when the anti-war rallies, organized by ANSWER, were covered this way--finding goofballs to say goofball things and then saying--see that's your anti-war movement. Indeed, if I ever did that on this board or in conversation, I apologize. The uglier side of mass rallies is always an easy score for the television journalist. But I know plenty of honorable McCain supporters who would never say such provincial nonsense. I don't think some overweight white lady complaining that Obama is a Muslim terrorist is indicative of the anti-Obama vote. There are plenty of people who won't vote for him for very legitimate political reasons.
