b,121For real, there's a difference between "cheap eats" and something like Big Tomy's which is filed under, "places I would have eaten when I was a broke ass college student."
    b,121
b,121As my friend put it when we were trying to find some place open after 2am, "I'm not going to someplace that's trying to pass themselves off as a Tommy's by some fake spelling."
    b,121
b,121In any case, I'm asking about shit actually worth making a trip for.
    b,121
b,121I forgot to include one of my faves in that category: Tacos Baja Ensenada in East L.A. UNFUCKWITTABLE.

b,121That makes no sense. Have you ever eaten there?
    b,121
b,121And no I'm not driving out 30 minutes for a taco.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Yeah, I've been to Tomy's and it's like any other greasespoon burger/Mexican joint you can find in Los Angeles. The only thing that makes it remotely special is that it's open 24 hours which - for that area of West L.A. - is unusual. b,121b,121I find the fact that you 1) ride for Tomy's and 2) wouldn't drive 30 min for a great meal - regardless of if its tacos or whatever, pretty much fitting together.

  • wont drive 30 minutes for a good meal? u simply cant live like that in LA. 30 minutes is on the low side even.

font class="post"1b,121b,121You sound like a sophisticated citizen in a developed country. b,121b,121I do however exercise which makes me more likely that I would want something substantial.b,121b,121I also know that the best meals are at home, so I don't find the appeal in driving out to Shinsengumi, wait 30 minutes, pay 30 bucks, and get three pieces of chicken and a beer. b,121b,121Do you thing though.

  • Just got back from LA.. Zankou Chicken is one of my favorite spots. Schawerma kills!! Fast and cheap..

Is $10 and under considered "cheap" in LA?

font class="post"1b,121b,121You can find $5 and under easily too but $10 and under expands your horizons beyond taco trucks and similar fare.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Yeah dude! I live in L.A. I>So do you[/i].b,121b,121Shinsengumi Yakitori, btw, is not a "cheap eat." Pretty fun place to go with a big group who can hijack the tatami room in the back. b,121b,121Shinsengumi Hakata Ramen = $10 and worth the 30 minutes (though Santouka is a lot closer for roughly the same amount of money). b,121b,121Home and Big Tomy's aside, where else you knosh around the Westside?

b,121If you're hungry as hell, go to Big Tomy's on Pico and Sawtelle and get the Tomy's Burrito with an Horchata. It used to be my late-late night guilty pleasure.

That's pretty much how I roll these days.b,121b,121That taco place on Gateway (close to Record Surplus) where the car repair shops are. I went in there while I was waiting for my oil change, and I had one of the best tacos...something cabeza...
