Here's the Scepter discog: a href="http://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/scepter.htm" target="_blank"1http://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/scepter.htm/a1b,121b,121...and its' sister label, Wand: a href="http://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/wand.htm" target="_blank"1http://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/wand.htm/a1b,121b,121There were also quite a few subsidiaries like Scram (home of Eddie Bo), Stop (country label that also released "I Know You Don't Want Me," excellent soul by the Endeavors), Hob (gospel). They even briefly distributed Toddlin' Town and Fania. Scepter/Wand is probably best known for Dionne Warwick, B.J. Thomas, and "Louie, Louie," but there were other good thangs as well. Let's talk about it...

Something that still causes pain.....b,121b,121I picked up the Soul Dynamics 'Stay In the Groove' in Chicago for a dollar in times long past.b,121A few years later sold it for 20 thinking what a baller dealer am I.b,121b,121 img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/breakface.gif" alt="" /1 img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/WHYMUSTICRY.gif" alt="" /1b,121> the red/black/white one, IMHO.

b,121on Scepter, Patti Jo 45 is excellent, First Choice 'This is the House' 45 rocks, too.b,121b,121Freedie Hughes - Gotta Keep My Bluff In on Wand is a fantastic cheapie.

I like the Underdog edits out of NYC of Corazon and Waterbed by LTG Exchange.b,121Been spinning them a bit recently. Real thick chunky vinyl.b,121b,121This has been mentioned before, but the Waterbed pt 2 (instr) on Wand 45 has a flaw in all copies at exactly the same point.b,121b,121Much better off getting the 12 or the LP.

dionne-"you can have him" is a banger

  • Stop also released a couple of high-dollar, always in demand funk 45s by the Soul Chargers...b,121b,121and as far as wand...I would have to say my fave is a common one...Chuck Jackson "I Keep forgettin'" one of the most uniquely arranged soul/r&b tunes ever recorded. I first heard it about 8 years ago, and it still flips my wig the same way when I heard for the seven thousandth time...I still cant figure out what some of those percussion noises are, anyway its amazing.

font class="post"1b,121b,121I think the orange label that Wand had in its' last days sons 'em both, although musically they're all about the same good...b,121b,121So do you think that Scepter's "psychedelic vomit" label is cool, too?

font class="post"1b,121b,121That's what I like about Scepter...that they got in on the disco bandwagon early, then went out of business right when that sound started to get really lame, in 1976...it's been pretty well-documented on the Strut that I am no disco fan, yet I love the singles in that genre that Scepter/Wand put out...

font class="post"1b,121b,121b,121I don't know if I'd describe Scram as a "subsidiary", since the connection is only via distribution.b,121b,121I have a bunch of faves on Wand, Don & the Goodtimes 'Turn On', Warren Lee 'Funky Belly', Chuck Jackson and Maxine Brown 'Hold On I'm Comin'....

font class="post"1b,121b,121That Don & the Goodtimes LP that Wand put out is excellent garage-punk in the Sonics/Kingsmen vein, nothing like that lame flower-pop LP they did for Epic.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Strangely enough, I have a Stop 45 by Billy Cox, of Hendrix/Band of Gypsys fame...it's a soul instrumental (IIRC) record, and not very good (one side is "Wichita Lineman")...I think this was before Scepter took over distribution.
