Damn, sounded like some funky country to me for the most part. Interesting.

I was sucked in by the one track too, but realized a year or so later that the whole thing is actually pretty good.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Hey, could you speak on that a little? Last year I really gave this album a lot of time and patience, because I'm a devout believer in Archie Whitewater, and the Odyssey record kept giving me these little flashes of similar feeling. Because of that, I chased it pretty far down the rabbit hole, listening to in all different circumstances and frames of mind. Ultimately, though, it just could not close the circuit with me. It's got one or two undeniable moments, but overall it feels a little too...[i]settled/i1. There's some stuff there that's worth geting into, but as a whole it doesn't seem to really reach out like I want it to, like it often seems [i]thisclose/i1 to actually doing. b,121b,121I'd be interested in hearing what this album does for its riders.

Tried that LP on a few times in stores... never bit. It's not worth 80 bones.

  • is this the same odyssey that has that funk/disco track "who"?? i believe it's been comped. once or twice.

"Our Lives Are Shaped By What We Love" is also available on 45. I've tried to snag this LP for 30 or less (that's what it's worth, tops, to me) to no avail.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Nah, it's a good listen. As you might expect, most of it pales in comparison to "Our Lives Are Shaped by What We Love", but there are a few other worthwhile moments on there.

  • I am not sure what people mean by a few good moments? For me a few moments is nothing. It has to be a good song before it means anything to me. b,121Looks like "Our Lives Are Shaped....." is the only track that has been mentioned as standout so far. "Battened Ships" is definitely a standout too. It's a great 70s soul track. b,121b,121"Broken Road" is also really good. b,121b,121Just these three tracks alone justifies the prices IMO.

  • can anyone post the mp3? b,121i only know "Our Lives..."

  • i never got too far past "our lives" but i will give it some more listens....b,121b,121while we are at it and while people are mentioning archie whitewater, what else falls into this category and what is this category called? i believe johnyp called it the "happysad" vibe many many threads ago...and on my yearly pilgrimage to GoodRecords, i ask what he's got in the "archie-air-happysad" vein. I'd include Air (the one on embryo) and moments of the 2 "Albert" LPs on perception (while more bloodsweatandtears rocked out, they have this similar undercurrent of melancholy). i would also throw in Sergio Mendes "Stillness" LP. not coincidentaly, most of these were advocated for and editorialized about in OnTheGo magazine's diggin in the crates section by one of my main diggin deeper influences, Ben Velez.b,121b,121more happysad recomendations plaese.b,121albums preferablyb,121songs welcome (ala lani hall "love song")

Yeah, "HappySad" is a good way of putting it. I've always referred to this type of stuff as "multicolored sweater music" I definitely tried to capture that vibe on a href="http://cosmobaker.com/stillgood.html" target="_blank"1this joint/a1.

font class="post"1b,121b,121I always took "few good moments" to mean "one of the few good tracks on an entire LP." You know, if there's only three good songs out of 12 or something...b,121b,121What I want to know (and no one has addressed yet) - what the phuck IS Odyssey? Is this a soul LP, or another one of Motown's anonymous attempts at rock?

  • PABLOPABLO 1,921 Posts
Multi-culti west coast studio band. Billed as psych a lot (it ain't) basically mellow rock with as I remember it a heavy country influence. I was very underwhelmed outside of 1 track. Averages around $80 so there's plenty of people that love it.

  • People have different taste so I can never argue that it can't be a one-tracker for somebody else but for me it's surely not.b,121b,121Check "Battened Ships" great 70s soul.b,121b,121object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" width="335" height="28" id="divplaylist"1param name="movie" value="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=5506796-337" /1embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=5506796-337" width="335" height="28" name="divplaylist" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"1/embed1/object1b,121b,121"Broken Road"b,121b,121object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" width="335" height="28" id="divplaylist"1param name="movie" value="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=5506797-47c" /1embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=5506797-47c" width="335" height="28" name="divplaylist" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"1/embed1/object1

For loosies, David Clayton Thomas's (I know, right?) "Don't Let It Bring You Down" stays just the right side of the line.

For the record I'm not hating on the album at all.b,121I was very glad I blind bought it for the one track, but as soon as I discovered what it goes for that baby was off to Japan with the quickness!
