I don't know if anyone else is a fan, but this is sad to me. David Foster Wallace hanged himself today.b,121b,121a href="http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/books/AP-Obit-Wallace.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin" target="_blank"1http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/books/AP-Obit-Wallace.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

just heard about this as well. I have to say I disliked his work, but respected his intellect, and was surprised how sad I was to hear the news.

Damn. His Harper's contributions were great. I never made it all the way through Infinite Jest, even though I tried a few times. Sad day.

It's very sad. I'm also disappointed by the way that, in many of the articles I've read about his death, they quote from this a href="http://www.marginalia.org/dfw_kenyon_commencement.html" target="_blank"1commencement speech/a1 that he made a few years ago in which he mentions suicide (seemingly to establish "hindsight"), but I think they miss the point entirely.b,121b,121His point is not that life is boring and pointless, but rather that one's sense of misery or isolation or lonelyness is self-imposed - and that ultimately it's up to you to decide how to interact with the world. Either feel that other people are annoyances to be dealt with, or to develop a sense of empathy and kinship with the rest of the world. He'll be missed. RIP.

Not that familiar with his work, but for those interested, here's a href="http://pandagon.net/index.php/site/the_beginning_of_the_decline_of_mccain/#When:21:09:00Z" target="_blank"1his piece on McCain/a1 trying to respond to Bush's negative campaign in 2000. b,121b,121RIP

  • This was a truly tragic loss, and had an unexpectedly profound effect on me. God, it hurt...I'll never forget finishing Infinite Jest on the green in Boston- where the book is set, I'll never forget hearing about his passing this morning from my sister... b,121b,121Mostly, it is just overwhelmingly sad. RIP, DFW.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Decency, dude. Start a new thread if you're going to concoct imaginary insults, and keep it out of the one about someone who is dead.

  • I still can't believe it. It is seriously fucked up, and surreal. b,121b,121One of my favorite writers.b,121b,121Sad. Really really sad!!b,121b,121RIP

  • Yeah, I'm still having a hard time wrapping my head around this. As I said above, and you mentioned, I guess I'm just overwhelmingly sad. He always said that in writing, 'Infinite Jest,' he wanted to create something sad...
