Possibly one of Keanu's best roles.

    No no no.

    Are you kidding?

Yeah... that might have been a bit much. He doesn't really have[/b] good roles... lol

But I like him in this. He fits well into that kind of movie. (read: cheeesy movies)

Keanu Reeves can't act to save his life. The Bill and Ted movies were enjoyable dumb fun, and so is Point Break to a lesser extent, but I've seen blocks of concrete that were more expressive than Keanu at his best. That said, he must have been pretty relieved when Revenge of the Shit came out, since Hayden Christensen managed to make him look like fucking Brando in that terd. When he shears off Count Dooku's dome, Christensen looks less like a man in the midst of the horrific realisation that he's crossed a moral boundary from which he can never return as he does like a man struggling to remember where he left his house keys.

Does anyone else think that Point Break is kinda gay, though? I don't mean that in a derogatory way at all, but the lingering shots of Keanu looking buff in the shower, and the whole theme of male bonding in an environment where women are pointedly excluded does sort of celebrate homoeroticism/latent homosexuality. Which makes the fact that it was directed by a woman all the more interesting. I dunno whether this qualifies as "appreciation", but I always thought that Point Break was a movie aimed squarely at gay men and women who like to watch gay porn. Maybe that's just me, though.

    Utah, get me two....

wow. I was unaware that anyone else realized that's the best line of the whole movie.

The director, Kathryn Bigelow, has pretty consistently messed around with gender roles in her films (Blue Steel, Near Dark, Strange Days). She comes from a heavy avant-garde/film theory background, and had acted in Lizzie Borden's 'Born in Flames', which helps contextualize her later work in Hollywood. I tend to think of her career as a director more in terms of throwing out questions and confounding assumptions about gender rather than drawing up a manifesto for gender roles in film or "aiming" at a particular audience. To the contrary, I think she aims her films at as broad an audience as possible precisely to challenge as many viewers as possible.

This movie is not far behind the wonders of Interview With A Vampire in the homoerotic stakes. Swayze, Reeves and some truly terrible scripting make the film impossible to be taken seriously.
However I'll happily watch the film for laughs and John C. McGinley's delivery of the squat speech almost single handedly redeems the entire movie.

Any movie where they can have a conversation while skydiving without parachutes is on some next level shit.

Point break? Please. That's some beginner's shit.
