    b,121b,121According to this Billboard reference book I got, Lewis is THE top-selling jazz artist, in a Top 500 (pop) list...Brubeck and Miles are on that chart too, but it's Ramsey who comes out ahead.

    b,121b,121The thing that always amazes me about that fact is, Chess released a lot of singles for him after the success of "The In-Crowd", "Sun Goddess" brought him to a younger crowd for the second half of the 70's, but you don't hear him on the radio outside of NPR (or at least I don't). I realize the politics of jazz on the radio vs. "making much bank on The Eagles and CCR" but...b,121b,121I'm complaining for nothing, considering it will never change.

    b,121b,121I can't speak for all albums, but they're mastered differently than what was mass marketed. Not that there wasn't any quality control, but there was a bit more care for a half-speed mastered album (usually made in pressings of 10,000 or less, which was low for back them but is probably on the high end these days) than something that had bigger pressings. The whole half-speed mastering thing became popular when labels were becoming more careless about making records, and some felt a need to make better quality pressings.b,121b,121Half-speed, audiophile pressings weren't targeted to the average consumer. Maybe because of it, labels were able to take advantage of these "special pressings", although with a number of titles they are considered better than the original LP's and various CD remasterings.b,121b,121With that said, a lot of albums were mixed and mastered very well, so arguably there was no need to go the half-speed treatment. I could opt for a Japanese pressing, but that might be different from the regular US and half-speed.b,121b,121It paved the way for all of the 180g and 200g reissues that are out there, most of which are mixed and mastered digitally, so if you want to be specific about a certain record, some prefer it to be analog from start to finish. Just personal preference, and after seeing the half-speed of Sun Goddess[/b] for years, I simply want to see and hear if it's any better.

    b,121b,121BET Jazz (before it became BET J) used to air it a lot and there were some great performances on that. I'd like to be able to see both Lewis and Brubeck before they pass on.

    Lewis hosts a show on the smooth jazz station in Chicago. Probably not what you were referring to as "hearing him on the radio," but I digress.b,121b,121
