how come in the UK version there was a broadcast of the actual finished documentar (in the show's world), which of course affected the characters lives -- but the US version is going on 4 years now with no mention of the reality show/documentary that's being made in their office?

That whole thing took place during the 2-hour special, right? They were probably able to do that because they knew it was the last episode ever. The premise of the "documentary" is what holds the show together and allows for the little solo interviews and stuff. Once you say "ok, the documentary's done" the show itself is done. You can go back for a "where are they now?" thing like the UK version did, but that's really it. There's no more occasion for there to be cameras present and hence, no show.
The US version isn't trying to wrap up right now. To acknowledge the documentary is to acknowledge that the doc will at some point be finished, and, by extension, the actual show being finished.

I commented about this to my girl as we dissapointedly watched the latest episode. Now that Pam and Jim have found romantic happiness they are not nearly as funny. But at least they are not focusing on Ryan the former temp turned executive anymore. That guy really drags things down. just read the wikipedia entry for the office US and its interesting to see the list of people that might have been cast as Michael Scott: Paul Giamatti, Martin Short, Hank Azaria and Bob Odenkirk.

But now the scriptwriters are setting them up to be the hottest couple in history since Romeo & Juliet - just a little too perfect. (Remember when they took the office poll of who they'd like to "do," and all the women unanimously admitted they'd fuck Jim in a heartbeat?) All we need is one good ep where one or both of them have a buffoon moment, and balance will be restored.

Well, just before the writers strike there was the episode where Jim shows up in a woman's warehouse outfit and a fake moustache along with Michael and Dwight in their misguided attempt to pull a major prank on the other branch where Karen, Jim's ex, is the manager. His intentions aside, that was a very bad look for Jim all the way around. Karen corners him and he really can't say anything in his own defense. I would call that a buffoon moment.
I would add though, that to meet an even higher level of buffoonery, the writers could have had Pam be mad at and cold to Jim for appearing to try to interact with his ex. Instead, Pam was not only cool about it, she attempted to console Jim.
For mine, the show is all about Creed Bratton anyway, although even his input is dwindling now. He always got the best lines.
On a brief RR tip - I'm surprised that all the used record stores haven't started pasting stickers saying "featuring Creed from The Office" on all the Grass Roots LP's on which he appears...
I missed the first episode (or two?) of the new season - I came in on the episode where Pam fixes Michael up with her landlord. But, I was disappointed that there wasn't enough Stanley input. We can't have him sitting in a corner doing crossword puzzles forever.
"Your Shrute buck isn't worth a Stanley nickel" - comedy gold.
I think the Pam/Jim issue is a classic problem with any show that uses romantic/sexual tension as a hook. I really can't see "The Office" trying to milk this, Rachael/Ross style however but hopefully, their relationship won't be a major shark-jump like it was in countless shows prior.

Damn, that episode hurt. They wanted to make SURE they left on an uncomfortable note. Like if The Sopranos ended a season with a whacking followed by a credits-roll.

...well, here it is three years later and he definitely had his ass mailed back air-mail special to him in a recent episode where Dwight creamed him in a snowball fight.
While neither Jim nor Dwight are likable characters, it was rather uncomfortable to see Jim curl up in a fetal position while Dwight kept hurling snowball after snowball. Maybe if he'd tried to strike back, it would have been easier to look at (even if he still failed). But it didn't go like that.
Even so...it's kind of interesting seeing my comments from a few years ago egging on Dwight while hoping that Jim gets humbled a little. I actually thought the snowball scene was a little cruel until I reread this thread.

Didn't look at it that way. I just know I liked it, as cringe-inducing as it was.
I briefly left the room towards the end when Toby asked to get his photo snapped with Pam.
A few seconds later, when I got back to the TV, the scene had moved on to Michael and his situation.
What happened in between?
I'm thinking either Toby tried to make a move on Pam, Jim tried to propose to Pam, or possibly both...

Nothing happened, just showed a teary eyed Pam followed by a talking head of her saying that she was really expecting Jim to propose to her.
