    But it isn't all that profound. It has nothing to do with the values of the numbers, only their notation. In a base-12 number system, for example, it wouldn't work. It works because we enumerate by 10s, and 9 is one less than ten. As you stack nines up, the tens place goes up by one while the ones place drops by one [9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, etc].

    Primes, squares, roots ... that stuff can get interesting (not that I'm some obscuro mathematician ... I just know enough to realize that this means next to nothing).

    You're right (to question that). It is if and only if the alternating sum is divisible by 11. Or, if you continue the process until a single digit number, if and only if you end with a 0.

    I just don't know anything about it, apart from that movie Pi. Sounds pretty sweet though.

    The short reason for why the 9 thing works though, is that 10, 100, 1000, or any power of 10 has a remainder of 1 when divided by 9. So adding up digits is just adding up remainders. If the remainders add up to multiples of 9, then they add together to get something divisible by 9, and vice versa.

    I find equations interesting for their own sake. I find all of the pure mathematics completely interesting. That's just where we differ. The divisibility properties are strictly mathematical, and applying those to texts is something more. That sounds interesting as well, but I don't know anything about it.

    I am roughly with you on one point: I do think that mathematics, astronomy, and religion all came about at the same time, which might explain why they are often so intertwined (or vice versa if you want).

    While we're on this, I might as well point out that you can tell if any number is divisible by 4 just by looking at the last two numbers. If they're divisible, then the whole number is.

    Same with 2 and 5, of course, but those are far more intuitive.
