does the processor even matter anymore? If I do get something, I'm probably going to wipe the hard drive and install windows xp. Strictly for music mostly and I'm on a budget so I'm trying not to go over 6-700 bucks.. Any recommendations?

GOOD. Vista is a piece of shit. already my co-worker and my dad have bought computers and had to bring them in within a month or two to fix a fatal error.

If you don't require quad-core, then Jan. 20 is the date to select your CPU. That's when Intel's 45nm dual-core product line is supposed to launch, and you're going to want one of those. By all reports the 45nm stuff is nothing short of simply amazing and overclocks like a dream, so you can buy a cheaper one and run it up to 4GHz or so without hesitation.

Also keep in mind that there will be another good price drop in older model CPUs around that time, too, if you want to save some money at a small cost in performance-per-watt.
