Very polite soft spoken dude. 1984-86 were the best years EVAR for metal shows in Seattle. I saw Metallica on the last date of the Master Of Puppets tour, Metallica with Cliff Burton on Ride The Lightning tour, King Diamond, Megadeth, Slayer on Halloween!, Exodus, Anthrax, Mercyful Fate in Portland, OR. Hirax, Possessed, Priest, Maiden, Etc. Those were the days.
I can't really get into all the lo-fi bm shit Southern Lord puts out.
I hear you (Striborg, for instance is definitely not for all tastes even w/in black-metal fans). But much of Southern Lord's output is very well-produced and gets into really interesting tangents from metal, like the last Earth record (the Morricone-inflected Hex...) and Om.
Saw Om in DC last night, as a matter of fact. Very long set with a few tedious moments given how churning and repititive their style of hypnotic stoner metal is, but had some highlights that rank among the best live music I've seen this year.

I went to high school with Possessed and roadied for them. Exodus were the east bay metal heroes and we use to have stupid arguments about who was heavier, them or Slayer. Pride got in the way of heaviness because about all we could say about Slayer were that they were posers for wearing make-up! Sadly I misseed both Mercyful Fate AND Celtic Frost when they played in the Bay Area, which Possessed opened up for and I could've gotten in for free because my mom grounded me for screwing off in school.
I only got to see one song of Metallica during their Ride The Lightning tour at the Kabuki in SF. I sneaked in for free but got thrown up on the stage and kicked out by some bouncers. I knew Cliff Burton though from clubs and he was always the coolest.

Anyway fast forward 6-7 odd years and I noticed he was swinging by our ends on tour so I thought fuck it and got us some tickets. I always get the tickets for gigs etc. as I'm the only one who can be arsed, but the tradition is I never tell 'em who we're going to see. But its always someone we've wanted to see... not this time though hahaha
The novelty wore off after about 10 minutes. Never really heard his stuff before but I was surprised at how lighweight and electronic it was.
I went for a piss and these 3 bouncers were looking at the stage through the glass window in the door: "he's Frickin' fucked inny"

Krozier??? was Geoff Crozier, demented psychedelic magician/performance artist from Seymour in Victoria, Australia; ???the Generator??? refers to his musical accompaniment at this stage in his life, the group Rainbow Generator, who had previously released obscure albums of their own. . He was both a stage magician/illusionist and a ritual magician/shaman, using multi-media performance and improvisation as the method and propulsion for his own anarchic vision of unhinged exploration, with each gig or recording session being a spontaneous ceremonial ritual to see how far out he could take it all and still be there once it was over.
I dare you to listen to this double LP stoned and with the lights out after midnight.

I listened to this album on my trip to the grocery store today. It wasn't lights out at midnight, but I have to say it was the most surreal feeling grocery trip I've ever had. It gave me weird feelings about the other shoppers. It also got me excited about giving out candy at Halloween next year and playing this on some speakers outside.

alot of Black Metal doods are tied into the whole pagan / pre xian movement... not so much satanism as a return to more ancient traditions.
one of my fave records of the last year is Wolves In The Throne Room's Diadium of the 12 Stars. These doods are on some serious commune livin back to the land earth majik craziness...
See, my thing is, with a lot of these newer Pacific Northwest bands, in particular, I get the impression that the aesthetic is so phony. The fairly sudden interest in all things pagan, and folk music. Two years ago, anarchists in crust bands now deeply into pre-Christian Norse spirituality, etc., etc. Vaguely Nietzschean (mis)statements to foster "are they Nazi's?" controversy. Bands made up of "punk rock kids" so desperate to ride the trend of black metal resurgence that they put out records with generic forest image covers. It's corny to me.
What's worse in my opinion, though, is that fence-sitting is at an all time high and people/labels who had previously held what appeared to be unobjectionable politics are now doing business with every shitbag, dodgy, or avowed National Socialist . . . provided he's authentic or "kvlt" enough.
Which is not to take anything away from Wolves in the Throneroom's music.

Compare Velvet Cacoon's logo to that of quasi NSBM band Grand Belial's key. Total bite. It was ironic seeing the guy from Nachtmystium (a fence-sitting group of backpeddlers) say that Velvet Cacoon was in his current playlist because Nachtmystium were going to tour with GBK, but backed out at the last moment because they feared the band would (quite reasonably) be pegged as Nazi sympathizers.
I like a lot of music in spite of its message, but I'm not big on putting money into many of these dudes' coffers.
