What are the last few movies that blew you away?

It's all about TV on DVd with Netflix. Run through all six seasons of Oz.

  • Shit..great question. I don't really recall anything recently that just BLEW me away(I suck at remembering stuff like this..I will get my queue and post it up to sort of give you an idea). But feel free to name some jaw dropping shit you checked out recently. I am pretty open minded to subject matter as long as it's well done.

  • Ok, here is my returned rental list. For some reason, this looks like it is missing a lot. My girlfriend shares this account with me, so we both add movies..but we both enjoy a lot of the same kind of stuff.

Yeah, ive seen a lot of Oz(dont think my girl has, though)..but honestly, after reading so much about The Wire on this forum,I think I might have to check that series out. I was going to just get the dvd off of Netflix, but I heard that they are showing the entire first season on HBO In Demand right now. So I might just take advantage of that since I feel like we waste money with the $UPER MEGA DELUXE cable package/bundle that we barely watch.

    Battle Royale
Move this to the top of your cue asap.

Too Short: Life Is: The Life and Times of Todd Shaw
This wasn't as good as I had hoped, but still worth watching I suppose.

    Reno 911: Season 1: Disc 1 (2-Disc Series)
    Fuck yeah, that show's funny.

WWE: The Self-Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior
Never heard of this, but I'm interested.... if its a real thing like a documentary and not just a wrestling show.

    Jacob's Ladder
    Good movie.

    Swingers
Seriously? You haven't seen Swingers? Vince Vaughn used to be skinny.

    Murderball
This is kind of a must see... these dudes are on some next level shit.

    The Aristocrats
Boring. An hour and a half of one joke.

  • That is actually movies we rented already and havent rated or something(it's not showing many others for some reason). As far as Swingers..I like renting older shit my girl missed that I think she would enjoy.

There was a thread about "psych film" maybe 2-3 months ago that might give you a lot of ideas as far as mind-expanding stuff. I'll just throw some ideas out here and aim for variety:

    late 60s/early 70s mind-expanding stuff[/b]:
Punishment Park (serious faux-doc about concentration camp for hippies, black panthers)
Holy Mountain (Jodorowosky head trip newly out on DVD)
Color of Pomegranate (unbeatable for sheer psych visuals)

    classic Af-Am indies[/b]:
    Nothing But a Man
    Watermelon Man
    Killer of Sheep

    music docs[/b]:
    Wattstax
    Devil and Daniel Johnston
    Freestyle: the Art of Rhyme
    Afro-punk

    Film Noir[/b]:
    The Killing (Kubrick)
    Sunset Boulevard (Billy Wilder)
    The Set-Up (Robert Wise)

    stylish noir-influenced foreign[/b]:
    The Conformist
    Le Samourai

    Recent Hollywood[/b]:
    Zodiac
    Knocked Up
United 93 (slept-on and misunderstood film)

    recent foreign[/b]:
Lemming (French thriller a la Polanski and Lynch)
What Time Is It There (slow, painterly po-mo Taiwanese film)

    recent docs[/b]:
Jonestown (about the cult -- also somewhat music related)
    Who Killed the Electric Car
    Jesus Camp

    TV[/b]:
    The Wire
    Freaks and Geeks
    Arrested Development
    Office (UK)
    Twin Peaks
    Undeclared
    Mr. Show

I just watched the trailor for it. Is your "buddy" a girl by chance? Just sayin'..it kind of came off as a chick flick in the preview(but then again, you surely can't judge a film by that, either). Just wondering.

Hell yeah! I caught that on Sundance or IFC..loved it. He is a character, for sure.

Sorry, but I totally ignored this question in my last post. I enjoyed American Hardcore..but then again, I am not someone who hardly has the personal attachment to that scene like some people might, so I am sure there are harsher critics of it than I might be.

I really enjoyed it. Mostly for the original footage. Especially of Bad Brains. Not incredibly informative, but worth watching in my opinion.

Yeah, partially inspired by this doc and the book Word Freaks (which follows a lot of the same Scrabble players) my friend and I used to have a regular records and Scrabble night and we got to the point where we were generally scoring in the 400s. My schedule changed so I had to stop playing on the regular but I think he still does so I wouldn't be surprised if he's scoring higher now. But neither of us could play on a clock like the pros do.

I'm interested in this, but haven't seen it yet. A Bmore friend took a lot of the OG still photos used in the film... and the director came to the fest I work for and was a nice guy.

Is this the one about scrabble? it was ok.

Hmm, I loved this one. Maybe not amazing filmmaking, but this doc has a lot of suspense and memorable "characters."

The doc about crossword puzzles, not so much.

Yeah, I liked Word Wars a lot. I also like Scrabble a lot, too..so maybe that helped a little bit(havent played in a minute, but any other online scrabble players on here?)

Yeah, those guys are Frickin' amazing. They really take that whole shit to another level.
