i have been recording bluegrass (and a little celtic) music all summer so im all banjoed and mandolined out. They are nice instruments though if played subtle and rhythmically. I got love for the banjo. Lap steels are slick too. Confederate instruments unite.
Funny how you mention a banjo and everyone immediately thinks of scary-ass Deliverence boy. God, what as an awesome scene.
That dude has the got a wicked case of:
yeah i don't know why i posted that pic because his face freaks me out and that scene is chilling. obviously not as fucked up as the "you sure got a purdy mouth" scene, but still memorably creepy. i actually saw a pic of banjo boy as a grown up and was surprised that he looks mostly normal as an adult.
the mandolin is what made me learn to appreciate john paul jones. battle of evermore is my #1 led zeppelin song. sandy denny sharing vocals didn't hurt either
"Sad Sweet Dreamer" - Sweet Sensation "I'll Be Holding On" - Don Downing
These are the only two soul songs I can think of with a banjo on them - sounds weird, but it works.
EDIT: I take that back, I just remembered that Bad Bascomb bluegrass funk LP from '73.[/b]
I love a decent banjo lick but it doesn't hold a candle to slide guitar.
Strange, but any music with slide guitar and/or banjo sounds the best in the middle of the summer, right when things start getting muggy and it's time to bust out the electric fan.
I can only think of Neil Young (not strictly a banjo) and The Monks as examples I like. I guess there must be more banjo gold in them thar hills but I have found it yet.

Oh shit, I might be able to chop this up....
My uncle's band Fresh Cut Grass, not be mistaken by a nu-jazz/ jam band out in California.
