Chico O'Farrill was a big unrecorgnized latin jazz figure. He started playing in Cuba, was bored of traditional rythms, and sought to incorporate elements of jazz into his music. He played trumpet and arranged for a lot of bands including Machito's and Dizzy Gillespie's, with whom he wrote the latin jazz classic "Manteca." I'm not a big latin jazz fan , so I can't really tell you much about his records, but he arranged some tracks on Willie Bobo's "Uno Dos y Tres," which is a great LP, and his record with Clark Terry "Spanish Rice" has a few good tracks on it. Also from what I've read he had a big comeback in the mid-90's releasing three highly acclaimed albums. You can google him or do a search on allmusic for more info.
