but for work i need to build a better blues collection
whats essential?
For starters:
Muddy Waters-The Chess Box
Bo Diddley-The Chess Box
Willie Dixon-The Chess Box
Howlin' Wolf-The Chess Box
In fact, there are loads of compilations from those who were on Chess, from one LP/CD comps to full blown box sets that are highly comprehensive.
Of course, blues isn't just limited to the Chess guys, there's stuff by Son House, Charlie Patton, Robert Johnson, Bukka White, Memphis Minnie, and also compilations on specific topics, be it female artists, dirty blues, instrumentals, etc. Early rural blues, to the coming of the British appreciation.
Muddy Waters also did a series of albums on Blue Sky Records, which was Johnny Winter's label on Epic in the late 70's. There's a deluxe edition of his Mississippi album that is worth getting:
There's also a series of CD's for each film shown in Martin Scorsese's The Blues[/b], including individual compilations for artists they felt were of interest.
Delta Blues: Robert Johnson Skip James Son House RF 1 (This is a famous collection from Folkways.) The Library Of Congress recordings Collections on Yazoo, Folkways and Arhoolie
Classic Blues: Ma Rainey Bessie Smith Lil Green Jimmy Rushing Joe Turner Collections on Stash and Folkways
Folk Blues: John Hurt Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee Willie McTell Etta Baker Rev Gary Davis Elizabeth Cotton Collections on Folkways, Yazoo and Arhoolie
Primative: John Lee Hooker (Try to document his whole carrer) Lightnin Hopkins Fred McDowell All the North Mississippi stuff that was released in the last 15 years ie RL Burnside. Collections on Yazoo, Arhoolie and Folkways.
Chicago Blues: Every blues lp on Chess (Muddy, Wolf, Horton, Koko, Sonny Boy) Buddy Guy Jr Wells BB King Bobby Bland Jr Parker And All the Alligator and Delmark blues albums.
crazy. i just heard a track of his on 89.3 WPFW this morning on the don't forget the blues hour. This is the kind of twangy, dirty, gritty stuff i've been looking for a while now.
yup there is already a collection but it ain't that great and really not much of anything prior to the 90's
i don't even know why i bother, the rednecks and hicks can't be bothered with the shit anyways, all they check out is american idol shit and jessica simpson
anyways, thanx for all the suggestions from you all and keep em coming
Arhoolie, Alligator, and Tomato are three labels that have come out with a lot of blues in the last 25 years, so if you want music that's more recent, check those labels out.

A lot of Tomato's releases are reissues, to be fair, but as far as contempo labels, Music Maker and Fat Possum are key (even though Fat Possum feels the need to stick at least one dance remix on their Delta blues releases).
Scrapper Blackwell Pink Anderson Bukka White Blind Willie McTell Sleepy John Estes Missippi John Hurt Fred McDowell Blind Boy Fuller Rev Gary Davis Slim Harpo and on and on...
MISSISSIPI FRED MCDOWELL-- yes. yes. I DON'T PLAY NO ROCK AND ROLL. ONLY PURE, NATHEL, BLUE. I grew up on the farm, ysee. So if you ever need anyone to PLOW, call up fred mcDOWELL.

Good Morning Little School Girl (yikes!) and Red Cross Store are my faves. That whole record is deserted island material???
John Lee Hooker (especially late 40's early 50's stuff) Blind Willie Johnson Robert Johnson Son House (1940's and 1960's recordings) Skip James Mississippi John Hurt (1920's and 1960's recordings) Guitar Slim Little Walter Muddy Waters Howling Wolf Junior Wells Elmore James Cannons Jug Stompers Tampa Red Blind Willie McTell Lightning Hopkins Rev. Gary Davis Otis Rush Magic Sam Freddy King Albert Collins Slim Harpo
if anyone is interested in some current blues that doesnt suck,Kenny Brown is the real deal, just wait until this dudes new LP with his new rhythmn section drops, it will be fire. He wrote a lot of RL Burnside's better tunes,is a sideman on a lot of Fat Possum stuff, grew up down the road from Fred McDowell and took lessons from him when he was a tennager and can rock a place for three hours...he plays at the Buccanner Lounge at least once a month(although his bass player, T-Money, has broken collarbone right now, so they havent played in a couple months). He has an acoustic LP out, although good, it really doesnt represent what dude is capable of...dude can get down on some hot ass juke joint steez.
I have no recordings to post...sorry, like in the best old-school blues tradition, you gotta go see him to hear him..for the time being at least...
here is his chillin with RL a year or two ago...

hangin with Junior Kimbrough(background) and I think the other dude is Junior's son
