I forgot to ask. I assume that there is a difference between African and Jamaican dub, what is it?

Also, any particular years I should stick to?

  • African Dub? Probably you're referring to this series of records by Joe Gibbs. Not actually made in africa. For the most part, dub is a Jamaican thing.

Mid 70's to early 80's is primetime. But there are good tracks being made right now too. One easy to find record that I love is

if you're new to dub music, then you should understand from the get go: a large spliff makes the music come to life.

  • am not really an authority, but heres a pretty good resource.

and you don't really have to be blown out stoned to enjoy. king tubby and harry mudie's dub conferences are a couple favorites.

This is one of the best dub albums I've come across in a while:

Copped it off ebay last month after a long search, and right now it's blowing my mind.

    Any other Bovell recommendations?

    and

  • The Aswad "New Chapter Of Dub" lp, while being fairly commercial...is a really beautiful record. Also Burning Spear's "Marcus Garvey's Ghost"...a basic, yet so essential.

is this considered a dub record?

  • not really...it's a post-punk classic...but it's produced by dennis bovell aka blackbeard and certainly has many dub influences or elements to it. actually the second Slits lp might by closer to dub, and especially the first two New Age Steppers lp which Ari-Up sings on. Actually...nobody has mentioned on-u sound/adrian sherwood yet...nor prince far-i!

here's one - very dubby early dancehall (1983) produced by mad professor with a cover to boot:

huge HUGE massive cosign on that. I'll sign on for any Rhythm & Sound material. Also from that camp are the Bullwackie reissues - don't sleep on those!
