Is it me or is this board more concentrated about LPs? thinking back to the modern soul threads it's mostly LPs that was mentioned.

  2. C.C. Neal "All I Want From You Is Your Love" Soul Craft
  3. The Exceptionals "Unlucky Girl" GRT

    tall paul hankins perhaps?

dont think so ... it's sung by a girl group (but there's absolutely no infos on the label), and it's about tall paul white who was a radio dj in Birmingham Alabama during the 60s and 70s ...

    very nice catchy tune

lmao - believe it or not, Mr.Pickwick, I was wondering if I'd hear from you about either the Tarheel Slim/Little Ann (cause it's pretty blues-y) or about the Wanda Jackson - or both.
Yes, it's the one and same country/rockabilly singer.
This Whirlpool track definitely has some country strains in it, but is as soulful as it gets imo.

  • Nicole Willis- If This Ain't Love (Timmion)
The Falcons- Standing On Guard (Big Wheel)
Betty Harris- What'd I Do Wrong (Sansu)
Marie Adams & The 3 Tons Of Joy- Whispers (Vantage)

Woulda responded earlier, 'cept for a minor registration issue. (You know how sometimes, when you haven't posted for a while, the system asks you for your password as if it's your first time there? Well, that's what happened here...needed a new password, got it, and thought I'd revive a couple of threads that I missed due to my "hiatus.")

Tarheel Slim is my man. I have one of his singles with Little Ann on Fire ("Lock Me In Your Heart"), plus a compilation LP on Krazy Kat, featuring him with and without Ann. With a name like Tarheel Slim, ol' boy cain't help BUT be bluesy, although he made some nice detours into R&B (with Ann) and rockabilly (look out for his solo "Wildcat Tamer" and "Number Nine Train").

Wanda's always cool with me...I'm really big on "Both Sides Of The Line," one of her country recordings from the sixties that has this lowdown acoustic blues guitar running through it...

Little Willie Parker - "Lookin' In From The Outside" (Mar-Vel)
Classic Chicago soul on a label known for country & rockabilly.

Newcomers - "Pin The Tail On The Donkey"/"Mannish Boy" (Stax)
The A-side, a Jackson Five ripoff, took some getting used to, but once I did "get it" I played that joker a thousand times in a row...

Dee Clark - "Nobody But You - Part 2" (Wand)
Part 1 is a feeble 1968 update of his old Vee Jay hit (Willie Hightower updated it better), but the flip is one of those "Part 2"'s where the band keeps playing while the lead singer plays MC (also see: JB's "Cold Sweat"). Give the drummer some! I'm a sucker for that kind of thing.

    Bobby Freeman - "C'mon & Swim" (Autumn)
ATOMIC!! Always a staple of my soul nites...

Bob & Earl - "Harlem Shuffle" (Marc)
Ever notice how the female background singers on this one sound like bored, middle-aged cafeteria ladies?

I have to massivley on this shit. I dug this up a decade ago while looking for soul/funk. This is a great record.
