Another year where it would be easier to compile a top 5 .

Off the top of my head it would probably consist of the following:

Top 5 (in no particular order):

Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury
    Trae - Restless
    Ghostface - Fishscale
    TI - King
Killer Mike - I Pledge Allegiance To The Grind

    Then:

Snoop Dogg - Tha Blue Carpet Treatment
Dogg Pound - Cali Is Active
    P Diddy - Press Play
    Justin Timberlake - Future Sex
Juvenile - Reality Check or Ray Cash - Cash On Delivery

The last two may be replaced by Lil Wayne & Birdman - Like Father Like Son, Project Pat - Crook By Da Book or Young Jeezy - Thug Motivation 102 though I haven't had the chance to listen to each more than a couple of times yet.

I live in hope that Nas will force me to reappraise my list.

Tom Moulton is kinda cheating isnt it?? Great comp though. If you like that I assume you checked the Larry Levan from this year too right?

  • CosmoCosmo 9,768 Posts
    Not cheating. Why so?

Hey Deej, why don't you post YOUR top ten before you try to scrutinize mine.

  • deejdeej 5,125 Posts
?? Not trying to scrutinize, just observing its full of music released over 2 decades ago...I was just joking about that being 'cheating.' i said its a great record! I'll get around to my ten when I decide it.

Jeez, i didnt even know Akron/Family had a new one. I have to get that.

Don't have a top 10 yet, but here is what i've really liked so far. There is a lot that i haven't listened to from this year though.

  • my top of 2006 :

Owusu & Hannibal - Living With Owusu & Hannibal

80's new-wave-feeling mixed with nu-soul vocals, production influenced by jay dee, tons of vintage synths, great melodies and enough weirdness to keep you interested = my pick for numero uno

    Koop - Koop Islands

    jazzy easy listening masterpiece

    Ghostface Killah - Fishscale

    u know the deal

Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury

    u know the deal

    Lilly Allen - Allright Still

    freshest pop of 2006

    Beck - The Information

     amazing production here

Nicole Willis & Boogaloo Investigators - Keep Reachin Up

neo-funk album thats not boring after second listen

Vikter Duplaix - Bold & Beautiful

    best babies-making music of 2006

Quantic - An Annoucement To Answer

eh can i get version without ohmega watts? the rest sounds great

    Nostalgia 77 - Borderlands

great jazz album but great euro-jazz-from-seventies-rip-off also, anyway worth checking

  • I think that Busta Rhymes' album this year deserves mention. I don't think the Soulstrut Massive was feeling it all that much but compared to everything else that came out this year, at least in the world of rap, it was one of the better releases in my opinion.

  • Beck - The Information
    Corinne Bailey Rae
Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint - The River In Reverse

also, not 2006 but new to me this year:

    Juana Molina - Tres Cosas
    Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise, Michigan

I'm gonna take back some of my earlier hate--I put it in a few days ago and relaized that this album sounds much better now that the temperature's dropped.

It was all wrong for summer.

i got the heads up about this album a few months back and for some reason totally ignored it. i just heard a few of thier tracks last week and was really impressed. i need to cop that soon.

Yeah, Busta and the Clipse are both "cool weather albums" I think.

Wow. My man admitted he was wrong,,,,,,,,

I would say it's more of a mix of groups like the free design, steely dan, prince, & sa-ra. (HOLY HYPERBOLE). Good shit either way.

I still like their first one best, but this is damn good indeed.

    For the Owasu:
It's a real "goofy" album at times, some songs are straight acoustic while other have the new-wave soul thing happening.

I never checked out the Steve Spacek LP. I can't really say I'm a big fan outside of "Eve" and the G.B. single. But to be honest, I'm not much of an album person as I once was either.

and oh shit...if we're talking about albums...how can I forget

better than that snoop album =P

  • At times apples and oranges but at times they both share a common sound. Still, you can't really compare the two.

    but yo

    Aloe Blacc > The Clipse

  • Judith and Holofernes "Abra??a a Tristeza"

    The homies!

Perfect for (being properly depressed) in any weather. Definitely check their earlier EPs, too.
