Wealth must be created before its distributed, the more the flow of capital is aritifically altered the less wealth is created and the poorer we all eventually become.
Preach on Robert Mundell, (or are you more of a Arthur Laffer nut clutcher?) How 'bout you GTFOOH with that Supply-Sider bullshit. The wealth has already been created, it needs to be distributed. Killing off social welfare programs which serve those not lucky enough to be within the class of people who already control the wealth is not the answer; the programs exist because there is a need for them.
As for everyone's attack on HCrink: It may be the environmental product of his surroundings: I grew up in Santa Rosa, apathy grows on trees up there.
Lame all around. Seriously. I have no time to even listen to you people try and rationalize why you won't be voting. Fuck all that dumb shit, it's just lame.
Aside from a lot of pointless negativity, I seriously think some compelling points have been made for both sides of this issue. Why is this such a hard topic to see both sides of? A blind allegiance to anything is just not good.
First, I hope you realize it was Dolo not me calling people scumbags.
Write in a canidate or don't vote for senate, but vote on other races.
The elderly, who are single largest voting block, live in a socialsit country. They receive both socialized income and medicine. They have more access to socialized housing and transportation. If young people voted they could get socialized medicine as well. More likely from Casey than Santorium.
You just gave a great reason not to vote. The more that vote the more people there are for politicians to woo and what is their standard method for doing so? goodies! treats! handouts!
Reaching into to my vast reserves of knowledge I bring forth my favourite bastiat quote:
"the state is the great fiction by which everyone endeavours to live at the expense of everyone else"
have you seen the size of the US's unfunded liabilites? america cant even afford to suport the shit we got going already and the more involved in the process the more 'sweeteners' will inevitably be added to this melange of doomed programs. Wealth must be created before its distributed, the more the flow of capital is aritifically altered the less wealth is created and the poorer we all eventually become.
The only reason we can't afford to care for Americans in need is Republican mismanagement. 6 years ago we had a balanced budget. Today we spend 2 billion a week in Iraq. We wont the rebuilding of NOLA.
Did you catch the news story about the Iraq reconstruction. Its over. Done. No more money for reconstruction. Bechtel, Haliburton et al walk away with billions of our dollars and the Iraqis get nothing. Less infrustructure today than when we went in. Welfare for Haliburton, Bechtel, Gulf, Exxon and Peabody is the kind of socialism that is destroying this country. Go tell your mom and dad that they wont be needing medicare, you will fund all their medical needs.
i went to pick up an old fat blind lady to drive her to the polls today. 15 minutes before i picked her up she had gotten the news that her dad had died. i gaev her a hug and we trooped down to the polls. i had to go in the booth with her, read her the names and guide her hand. she was having fun with it...saying "cant wait till he's out of office" and stuff like that. when she thanked me, i told her it was an honor. and it really was. that lady made my day
big ups to indiana ohio new york massachusettes. hope we get some more good news.

The US was in no better position to meet its future financial commitments 6 years ago than it is today. The simple fact is that the system in the US is such that it sees an increasing number of dependents subsidized by a decreasing number of producers. It is by its nature unsustainable in the long run.

You can say what ever you want if you don't believe in reality. The majority of Americans are projected to be in the 20 -44 age range for a long time. Here are the numbers from the census bereau:
Rare stamp may be sealed in Florida ballot box[/b]
FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (AP) -- A rare, valuable stamp that could be worth at least $200,000 may be on an absentee-ballot envelope sealed in a box with other ballots from Tuesday's election.
Broward County Commissioner John Rodstrom discovered the stamp, which may be the famous Inverted Jenny, while reviewing absentee ballots. There was no name on the envelope so the vote did not count.
What seemed like a small stamp collection on one envelope caught Rodstrom's eye. At least one was from 1936, Rodstrom said. Then he noticed one had an upside-down World War I-era airplane -- the hallmark of an Inverted Jenny.
"I was a stamp collector when I was little," Rodstrom told The Miami Herald. "I recognized it."
Rodstrom discussed the stamp with the other members of the canvassing board -- Broward County Court Judge Eric Beller and the supervisor of elections.
A stamp-collecting Broward sheriff's office deputy overheard them talking about the possible Jenny. After hearing the description, he said the stamp would be very valuable if it was real.
But it was too late.
"By that time we had already sealed the box. And once you seal the box, under the election law you can't unseal it," Beller said. "We looked at the election law to see if we could unseal it, and we didn't think we could."
The 24-cent Jenny stamps were printed in 1918, said Maynard Guss, president of the Sunrise Stamp Club. Stamp sheets were run through presses twice to process all the colors, and on one pass, four Jenny sheets went through backward, Guss said. Inspectors caught the errors on three of the sheets and destroyed them, but somehow, a sheet of 100 stamps got through.
Stamp collectors have spent the past 88 years trying to find them all. Replicas are sold on Web sites like eBay.
But this Jenny, if real, might not be as valuable as it could have been. When the absentee ballot was mailed the stamp was canceled, reducing its value, Rodstrom said.
hey crink, sorry i was so hard on you. i think i used the word "venomous" to describe how i criticized you.
anyway, shit still sucks, but i still feel strongly about voting. sotomayor and kagan are reason enough to be thankful we dont have a republican inthe white house.

This.
When people ask me how can I possibly still want Obama in the WH, this is the reason. There will probably be 2 or 3 SC appts next term and it is very important that a Republican not make them... any more right wing judges sitting and things could get really fucked up for decades. Obama isn't the liberal warrior I hoped he would be, but his decisions about the SCOTUS are infinitely better than any right-winger's.

Jesus I can't even imagine the kinds of nuttiness that McCain would have got us into. I may feel like the new healthcare bill is not all that I wanted but I am beyond happy that Obama got it done. Ditto of DADT, challenging Israel on settlements (sort of), the stimulus and 8 million other things. Obama is better for a lot of reasons not just SCOTUS.
For the sake of context, this is the video that prompted the thread's bumping (thanks to tripledouble for the link):
I vote, but I still feel Crink's pessimistic attitude. A lot.
Regardless of what you guys think could have happened had more liberals refrained from voting (and I don't recall anyone actively telling others not to vote in this thread), at this point it doesn't look like voting alone is going to save the country.
twop, i dont think anyone tried to offer voting as an answer to all the country's problems. its just one small venue to raise your voice, among many others.
