Rumors of a coup swept Bangkok today as the Thai military blocked the area around Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's office with tanks.
BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) -- Tanks and armored units of the Thai military blocked the area around the offices of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Tuesday night amid rumors of a military coup, witnesses said. Thaksin, who is in New York, declared a state of emergency via a government-owned TV station.

Rumors of the coup swept the Thai capital after an army-owned television station suspended regular programming and played patriotic songs.

  • The Coup live.

Apparently this happens every couple of years in Thailand.

Is it just me or does an army owning a TV station not sound like a good idea?

the problems, that theoretically is a dangerous one, is that half the army is pro the other half against the current prime minister.

    hope it remains calm though....

  • It has been comparatively stable in the past, but their record for 2006 is pretty much fucked up.

the actual prime minister changed laws in januar 2006 to increase his personal income. this lead to demonstrations and a boycott of the latest elections by the opposition. the opposition continued their demonstration mainly in bangkok until the current prime minister taksin granted new elections that were supposed to take place mid october.

martial law has just been proclaimed says rauters.

  • Okay, so I heard back from my friend in Thailand. Seems everything is cool. I think he was drunk when he emailed me this-

Sweetness, just awesome, awesome sweetness. Nah, kidding, this is a "Thai" coup. If this was anywhere else and there was a coup, I would feel threatened but here, it's like here, these people don't know how to have a coup! A lot of what makes the news here is a like a cry to the world, like, "We can be bad! Watch, we can have car bomb's too, because we're cool." I see Thailand like mimicking the rest of the world and somebody decided to have a coup. I mean the leader of the coup met with the King to discuss it first, it's like, if it was really a coup, you don't discuss it first with the countries largest political figurehead.[/b] Oh well, here's a picture of a tank.

    No worries

  • TAKE A LOOK-Military coup in Thailand

Thailand's armed forces seized power without firing a shot,
dismissed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's government, revoked
the constitution and promised a swift return to democracy after
    political reforms.
It is Thailand's first coup in 15 years but its 18th since it
became a constitutional monarchy in 1932.[/b]
