I love how white folks get fuckin' ass hurt because their denied one little thing, get over yourselves.

    Seriously.

Despite the fact that I own a multimillion dollar yacht and my daily routine consists of dining on scrimp and caviar as I party with supermodels and line my cat's litterbox with the contents of you little dudes' want list, there will forever be an empty place in my soul until I am allowed to proclaim myself WHITE NOT OF COLOR AND PROUD.

I'm pretty happy to be white.

Pretty happy where I live too.

Although come to think of it, I'd probably be pretty happy being Asian and living in Taiwan also.

There are various levels of pride also. I'm not exactly proud of the shape that our country is in right now. In fact, its pretty fucking emberassing. And we obviously have some very dark moments in our history.

But if somebody were to ask if I were proud to be an american...? No, since its not something I "acheived". But I do feel a sense of pride in all the cool things that america has done over the years, even if some of them were completely pointless, like landing on the moon. We made the car, we made clint eastwood, we made funk and soul and blues, the telephone, the PHONOGRAPH....

We have cities like NY, LA, SF, etc.... I think we've done a lot of stuff considering our short history.

I don't think there is anything wrong with feeling some sort of pride in all that. I would bet that most people from most countries feel the same way.

That's america, to me. Everything bad that is going on is like a big ugly beast, and I hate it. I try not to think of America as being that. I try to think of America as being my little neighborhood of South Park. Its got trees, a cool video store, a great mexican resturant, a hipster bar, a record store, all within walking distance from my house. And yesterday I parked at my house behind a lowrider cadillac with chromed out wheels and all that shit. Cholos standing on the corner, kids riding around on their bikes and skateboards and shit... random 808 bass from passing cars. Leon's appliance repair where I get my washer and dryer fixed. The 2 Iraqi brothers that work at 7-11 and always say Hi to me when they see me. The little Mexican aunty that works at Sombrero's that waves at me and HJ when we jog by.... The lady across the street that feeds our cat when we are away. The little kids next door that like to stand on the fence and talk our ears off. Damn those fuckers are cute.

That's my America, and I like it here.

  • the whole concept of national pride is completly absurd to me. Why be proud of something thqt was given to you by birth, without your own doing?

So I assume you think someone saying "I'm Black and I'm Proud" is equally absurd??

    I disagree.

If opressed people who for centuries were denied basic rights as a human being, as an act of courage show pride in their heritage and thereby confront their opessors, thats's something relevant and of course good. If at this day and age, the mentioned quote still has the same meaning, it would shed a bad light on the America that you are so proud of.

Following your logic, you also disagree that someone saying "I'm white and I'm proud" is absurd? See or feel the difference? I hope so.

So people who recently moved to America to escape injustices in other countries can be proud to be Americans.

And the ever popular "people of color" can be proud of their heritage because they were oppressed.

But a white man born in America can't be proud of neither his color nor his heritage.

And that makes sense to you???

Now we're talking, I think race is a huge factor in who's proud to be an American and who isn't and you can't look at the pride that immigrants have as the same pride that is being flaunted around here through the same lens.

and to answer your question yes it makes total and complete sense. Being on some "white and proud" mentality to me reads: "SORE WINNER". Just deal with it dude. I love how white folks get fuckin' ass hurt because their denied one little thing, get over yourselves.

sorry if that seems heavy handed but I'm not really the one to hold back on issues of race and especially when I'm usually one of the few "colored folks" on this board willing to speak up.

First off, let it be known that I personally am ONLY proud of things I've actually accomplished in my life.

The comment made was that it wasn't logical to be proud of something that you were simply "born in to", which we ALL seem to disagree with as being Black is at least one exception......and that was my point.

My family came here to the U.S. within the last century to better their lives and their families lives. My Grandfather was PROUD to come here, serve in the Navy and work for minimum wage. And I'm proud of HIM for doing so.

And if that makes me proud to be an American, then that's my perogative and neither you or anyone else is going to convince me otherwise.

Use this example....I'm proud of my daughter. I'm proud that she made it to college while avoiding the pitfalls of drugs, alcohol and crime. I'm not particularly proud of that time she broke the neighbors window with a rock, but overall I'm proud of her as I think any parent would be.

And while you may not want to admit it, America has a lot more to be proud of than be ashamed of. And every American should have the right to have pride in all the good things we have accomplished as a nation.

But if you want to JUST look at the negativesreality[/b]......well then yeah, I can see how you think being a proud American is absurd.

I just don't agree with that line of thinking.

1). You're personally proud of things you've done? Great. I'm not sure what the mans in the context of this discussion

2). It depnds on your thinking on what's a "norm" and what's an "exception". I'm not sure why you have an issue with or can't understand "black and proud" or something like "Juntos Peliamos" (together we fight). These are mantra's for groups of people that are always on the bottomn rung of American society.

3). Just look at the negatives? I think you mean look at "the reality of America" and that's how I see it, YES THEY WONT CUT MY HEAD OFF FOR SAYING WHAT IM SAYING but to wipe the slate completely is a huge leap in logic.

4). I mean it's really easy to be a white male (and to a larger extent white regardless of gender) and proclaim "AMERICAN DON'T TREAD ON ME" or something. And at the same I time I really can't understand a person of color, who's his/her eyes are open to the state of America, as being 100% proud of living in the United States.

    2) I have NO problem with "I'm Black and I'm Proud" as a matter of fact I was the one who brought it up as a legitimate example of someone being proud of something they were simply "born in to". Did you not see that??

    3) If you believe that the REALITY of America as a whole is something to be ashamed of I feel sorry for you. The good far outweighs the bad but maybe it takes someone like me who's been around almost 50 years to recognize that. You will one day too.

    4) There are more white males on welfare and in prison than any other race. So either they just didn't get the memo about how "easy" their lives were supposed to be or your full of shit. As far as being "100% proud" that's a bogus term....like I mentioned with the example of my daughter, you don't have to be proud of EVERY action to be proud of something/someone as a whole.
And for those of you who actually believe that all white Americans are rich and living on easy street it's time for a reality check.

You seem mad, Rockadelic. Maybe watch some footage of some baby bald eagles being born as you munch down on some American Pie and Freedom Fries.

Yeah there are more whites on welfare (not sure about jail), but the media in American and Americans themselvs still portray/see colored folks as a the undesirable element in this country.

Where did I directly say "ALL WHITES ARE FILTHY RICH!". Man, you're totally showing the typical white knee-jerk reaction when someone questions you types in the slightest way.

I feel sorry for someone who's seen and lived through a lot more of American's bullshit and still can't man up and admit our country is fucked up. Again, it's real easy for a man like youself to never ever be able to see it like this. I can't fault you too much.

I can't think of any country that held the global responsibilies America has and not had some negative marks on its past or present. But in terms of countries in the world it is still a place with more freedoms and opportunities than most others.

America is fucked up in the sense that you can easily see whats wrong with it, but that don't mean you should show the opposite of pride or criticize others prideful view because of that.

    Not mad at all.....

The filthy rich white american comment was for Mr. Rillz who's yacht/caviar comment was ridiculously absurd at best.

There are PLENTY of fucked up things about my country, my race, the BLACK race and every other country/group on the planet.

I choose to recognize the GOOD and the BAD and after 50 years I think the good FAR outweighs the bad in America. It's sad that you don't see it that way. Either your life sucked more than mine or you have made less of the opportunities youve had. I truly hope it get's better for you.

I just don't have the "If everything isn't perfect it sucks" attitude.

I grew up in the same country as you but at a different time. I grew up in the Vandeveer Projects in Brooklyn which is pretty far from having a silver spoon in my mouth.

I think America is a great country and wouldn't live anywhere else if given the choice.

You don't seem to share that opinion and you seem to be pretty miserable having to live in a fucked up place as you see it. And that is sad.

And for someone like you to try to dictate what people can/should and can't/shouldn't be proud of, based on your views, is pretty fucked up.

As Tower Of Power so eloquently put it....."You're Still A Young Man"

    My 2 cents as a non-american:

The best elements of American art/literature have mostly been born from oppresion.

That there are worse countries is no excuse for mediocrity.

Day doesn't become night instantly, it's gradual and unnoticed unless you're paying close attention.

It's home to some of the best people I've ever met.

The sense of optimism has to be applauded.

The world loves people from America, but most countries don't like America.

  • Did any of you guys see the Ken Burns' "Jack Johnson," documentary? It was excellent.

Anyway, at the end, Stanley Crouch is talking about Jack Johnson, and he says that basically, only in a country as strange, beautiful, and ugly as America could someone acheive as much, live as large, lose as much, and become the man that Jack Johnson was. (paraphrasing, but that is the essence.)

I love that quote, I think about it alot, and it is how I've looked at this country ever since. This country is an amazing, unique, and beautiful place with some of the ugliest and saddest scars and shortcomings imaginable. I truly think that it is an absolutely unique place that will never be duplicated.

But, I hesitate to use terms like, 'greatest,' or 'number one,' or anything like that, because I think those terms as they apply to countries are bullshit, and one of the biggest problems with the mentality of our country. Why the obsession with being or staying, '#1'? Who is voting on this rating? Is there a committee of redneck bumpersticker and t-shirt makers who get the final say on the country ratings?

I think people in this country have gotten so caught up in their own hyperbole (current administration most DEFINITELY included) of being great and unique that they have forgotten what it is that has made our country so special and such a rolemodel in the past. Our current leaders have shown that they are willing to sacrifice our founding principals and the very things that make our country great for mere survival. And THAT is a tragedy, and no matter how you 'rate' our country, it makes us a lesser place, institution and living entity as a nation.

I live in Boston, where the nation began. I grew up in Ohio, a vastly different and more rural place than where I live now. And, today I just flew back from 2 weeks on the other side of the world in Hawaii, a completely different place, culture, climate and people...that amazingly, is still a part of this country. How could I not be proud of a place that diverse and incredible? And, how could I not demand that absolute highest from each one of that nation's citizens and leaders? Anything less would be treason.

But.....over the last 100 years we have OWNED popular music.

All the worthwhile music was either created or strongly influenced by people from another continent who were brought to America forcefully and yes, you OWNED those.

As far as most "popular" music goes, especialy the kind of crap that gets play on commercial radio, MTV and mainstream clubs... you can have all of that for yourself. I'd even donate you all the european shit club music if I'd own any of it.

Co-sign, MTV & Clear Channel were on some bullshit 90 years ago.

From strictly a music angle America has been the overwhelming dominant creative force over the last 100 years.

We are a "new" country and we don't have the fine art, classical music, traditional music history of places like Europe, etc.

But.....over the last 100 years we have OWNED popular music.

Sure you can throw out some examples of niche genres that have come from elsewhere.

But the fact is, musically, America has lead the way for the last century.

And there ain't no arguing it so don't even try.

    This claim is ridiculous.
