  • Here's some that I tend to use my friend:

    Spinners: It's a shame

    Gwen McCrae: Doin It

    SOS Band: High Hopes

    Ray Barretto: Soul Drummers

    Modulations: It's Rough Out Here , or I'm Hopelessly in love with you

    My brain is kinda slow in the morning. I'll post again when I get something else in my mind.

    word....let's talk records up in this sumbitch. I'm doing a gig on friday night where I'm playing in the "soul/funk/latin" room (whatever that means) and I'm kind hyped to play shit I usually don't fuck with too often in the club.

    Off the top of my cabesa piece:

    D-Train
    Nick Straker "Just a lil' bit of Jazz"
    Roy Ayers "our time has come"
    Pleasure "Joyous"
    That new Escort piff (I need to cop this on vinyl)
    Charanga 76 "Good times" (I'll disco latin version 12'' I coped in Japan)
    LTD Exchange "waterbed"

    man I'm drawing blanks here.....

    That looks like a pretty perfect playlist so far as I'm concerned. Don't know the Escort track but Nick Straker and Joyous never fail.

    So I'm still the only person in this thread whose list isn't on some early 80s NY loft garage thing? I actually thought this was a thread I could both learn from and contribute to but instead we get a nice list of DJ classics. Can we have some big dudes step in to define a Disco Funk Banger? Is it BT Express or is it Rene & Angela?

    Fatback - Do The Bus Stop
    Mandrill - Dirty Ole Man or Livin It Up
    Brick - Brick City
    Cameo - Its Serious
    The Jacksons - Your Ways
    Kraftwerk - The Robots
    The Bar-Kays - Shake Your Rump To The Funk
    Stacy Lattisaw - Dynamite

    Relax.

    BANGER is guaranteed crowd response. Some disco/funk which are not bangers can be laced along w/ the heavy hitters. Obscure album cuts to compliment the hits. U know this already. There are no rules. But there are songs that everybody just agrees are hits.

    Couple that I've been rolling out on the regular;

    Eddie Kendricks: Date With The Rain (long version)
    Spanky Wilson: Sunshine Of Your Love

    It's easy to mix the Spanky Wilson out of almost any of the long breakdowns in the Eddie Kendricks, and it usually works pretty well. Girls seem to love that Spanky tune.

    Some others;

    Crown Heights Affair: Far Out
    Chaka Khan: I Know You, I Live You - the Krivit edit is that crack for the club, but the o.g. does the job as well.
    Patrice Rushen: Haven't You Heard

    Well, I'd say there are 2 types of records that get (positive) responses from crowds. 1) Banger! 2) Tuuuuuuuune! Rene & Angela would be a Tuuuuuuune!

    Nowt wrong with Classix, Faux. I'm just pointing out mis-categorizations. I thought you'd approve of such precision.
