    Word. Still have that tape?
I really wish I would have held on to all of my tapes from channel 5/saturday @3pm!
Truth be told, a lot of those flicks were shown on 2+ hour time slots and often ran longer versions than are available even on DVD today (Death Chamber/Shaolin Temple and Kung Fu Warlords/Brave Archerpart 1 being two that come to mind).

This thread makes me want to replenish/stockup on some classics. I would start w/ a high quality Venoms.
With all the cultfandom, Im surprised a handful of these flicks dont come fully equipped w/ interviews, timelines,OG chinese lang trk,OG dub, etc. The whole works. This shit aint underground anymore.
WTF. Post wu tang and kill bill, Becky knows this shit.
Anybody know what the tangle/tie has been w/ these joints?

Question , now I usually always enjoy the true real language track for these films with subs. But there are times that a few of these films I can only watch with the OG dubs? 5 Deadly comes to mind.

    Anyone else?

Oh, I most definitely prefer the OG english dub for my Shaw films whenever possible.
It's clearly a nostalgia thing as it's how I grew up watching these flicks.
Any other film of non-english origin I gotta see with subs - including any other HK flicks made after 1983.
But pre-'83, GOTTA have em in english.
And you're right, 5 (Deadly) Venoms just doesn't seem right watching it in cantonese or mandarin.
Same goes with just about any Shaw flick IMO.
    But that's just me.
It's another reason I'll hold onto my old tapes.
As it stands to reason that we'll never see these released in english again.

I've always wondered tho, why do many people that review these films, tend to clown the dubs?

And ur totally right on needing to have them when watching shaw flicks.

But I can remember even before Wu Tang dropped 36 Chambers, many people laughing at dubs. Even to this day, a good amount of people still think all dubs are a joke and won't even bother with them.

When I could never watch (Even in the 80's) 5 Deadly or something like Mystery of Chess Boxing any other way.

Anyways... Side question for you Paul or any other NYC cats. I haven't been down there for about 4 years now.

Are the Porn/Fu bootleg shops still around? Or is it just porn now? It would be a shame if they're not. So many trips, where I'd always hit them up and walk out with bootlegs galore.

I mean, now you can get mad old school bootlegs in any major city. But I think a trip down just wouldn't be the same without that shit.

The Porn shops are still around, and alot of hole in the wall shops still sell Kung Fu joints.
There are a quite a few spots uptown that do KungFu/Anime/RKellySex/Madea dvds.

I'd completly recommend this site for DVD comparisons as to which version is best to get

    http://www.dvdcompare.net/

For example it's Eight Diagram Polefighter review.

    http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=4021

& Go through this link here

    http://www3.cd-wow.us/index.php?affid=14275&pp_nr=1

for cheapish shaw brothers DVD's. I as an Eglish fella consider $9.95 with free shipping pretty damn good for Shaw Brothers DVDs. The link above is some university discount hookup link, so if you google cd-wow, you'll get higher prices.

That is a whole crazy thread of its own. The visuals are perfect, sometimes the soundtracks have been re-edited & the subs are not bad, but not perfect. I don't buy the lousy bootlegs. Only the R3 dvd's. This is the only way to own many of these titles now. An American company will be releasing some in the fall which will be amazing, but their selection is not that great because of copyright issues.

Specifically, Miramax bought the N. American release/remake rights for about 50 of 'em in 2003 or so, and are letting them sit to rot because they're dicks. Pretty much all the popular martial arts ones.

Image Entertainment are putting some out for the R1-only folks, and I've heard different stories - don't know whether they'll just be straight ports of the R3 ones Celestial/IVL are doing w/ an extra english dub, or added extras and cleanup. Super Inframan should be out in October and Boxer's Omen in Novemeber. Several are slated as far as back as May 2007 (and these were supposed to trickle out in April originally.) Some of the release dates are up at their site:

Also, what's up with Celestial/IVL putting out some of 'em on VCD only? Lame.

Just a bump to take a moment to say R.I.P.

Run Run Shaw deserves an actual post (IMO). But this thread was great for some flicks someone might want to check out.

It's odd to think of what my taste in film would be like today without the influences of Run Run Shaw. I can't remember my first Shaw Brothers film, but whatever it was had me hooked right away...

Before I was a teen, I can remember making the hour long ride many times into the city to loose myself in the amazing world of SB films at a run down theater that still showed HK/Kung Fu on the regular.

Anyone that's ever been into martial arts films has probably seen a ton of SB films. A few weren't that great. Some were average. But the ones that were great were something truly special.

    Living to 107 :bizzo:

    R.I.P.

yeah man, if u can't get ahold of it, boxer's omen is on utube. RIP RUN RUN SHAW. one of the last real moguls.

  • The beginning of Five Venoms is great, but I think that movie is incredibly overrated.

    My choices, in no order:
36th Chamber (fave overall Shaw movie prob)
Kid From Kwangtung (some of the worst humor in Shaw history, but Hwang Lee is too sick in this)
8 Diagram Pole Fighter (that ending!)
    Avenging Eagle (Sun Chung)
Come Drink With Me (so influential)

  • Props to this scam gibberish for resurrecting a dope thread. 8 Diagram Pole Fighter is bananas...

I saw "Come Drink With Me" for the first time earlier this week. Interesting how Asian movies had the arterial blood spray years before Americans even started with bright red tempura paint and squibs. Then "Water Margin" this weekend. I like the scenery, anachronistic music (what a theme! Plus cues with The Zombies "Time Of The Season" in mind) and the cast, especially the comedic relief of Fan Mei Sheng, although it's difficult to keep track of all the ancillary characters, all of which receive actor credits until an hour into the film. Everyone needs to see "Boxers Omen" at least once. I'm glad I was gifted a copy before it went out of print and prices skyrocketed.
