haha - I grew up in Central Florida and went to UCF for my degrees. I feel your pain. You're in an area where the only thing remotely accessible is Downtown Disney (Pleasure Island is surprisingly decent nightspot, considering it's Disney). You're stuck in tourist country, and to get anywhere outside of it would be a 1-way 30 min. drive through congested traffic at minimum.

Ashrock is mad cool - link up with him if you can. And if you're single, it's insanely easy to g'off on Euro honeys at Disney.

Actually, Orlando has two sides. One is the wack ass amusement park, everything costs mad loot side, then you got the other side where it's actually pretty chill. Downtown Orlando, although, mostly for the mainstream actually has some cool ass places to hang. You just gotta look beyond the surface. Nobody knows about this side usually because it's over-shadowed by Rat World.

But Orlando has it's moments, not to mention that the traffic on the North end is nothing like what it is on the lame amusement park sides.

    hollur.

there is nothing less cool than a tourist only "resort hotel". theyre always 30 miles from anything, the retaurants and room service are way overpriced and close early, and theres no vending machines for a late nite fix - just a super overpriced gift shop with $2 candy bars and $3 cokes thats closed by 9 PM. These places exist soley to house conventions of salesmen who play golf badly and talk about the latest in widget sales news in the lobby while waiting for the big stupid conference to start. plus the internet usually $15 a day for access and the free wi-fi in the lobby is always "down". feh!

Yeah the "attractions" area is horrible. You should have dropped me a line, I would have provided an escape route. Out by UCF is also a strip mall nightmare. The lack of public transportation really does trap you, it's the #1 thing I hate about this place.

There are some cool areas tho - thornton park, winter park area (a little high end yuppie), asian district on colonial dr. where you can get your bim bap on, downtown after dark has a decent nightclub scene, there are places like will's pub where you can catch sam rivers playing, a few shitty record stores, I dig the wildlife preserves/forests to the north too.

    PS: hey g**rges! call me

    Ya'll are so right.

OK. Orlando does not suck. Not at all. There are lots of chill and bangin spots when you get the fuck out of fakeland.

This resort spot is just terrible. Not even laughable, just flat out terrible.

Last night we got a car and went into the downtown area. First was the Asian section along Colonial(I may get my street names all wrong). That was great we found a nice Viet joint that looked clean and populated. I also peeped some of the neighborhoods right off of that section. Pretty chill looking. At first I was reminded of some of the seedier Asian sections of Honolulu--which is good thing IMO. And then there were some cool little Art Deco apt buildings ala Miami.

Then we headed down Colonial some more and turned South on Orange and hit about 15 spots in that Wall st./Church St. area. This was between 9:00 and about 1:30. We got roped into Makos by the chicks on the sidewalk. "Free Drinks" I have to say, I'm totally cool with that soft-core strip club shit. Then we peeped this place down Wall street a little. They had a reggae DJ and then a band. The DJ was chill, but the band wacked out some. We had just blazed, so it all fit perfectly. Chicks were clowning us because we had our Makos wristbands, but my man was spinning to his advantage. I figured having that shit on your wrist says, "I'm a dumbass horny tourist loser." But on the contrary, chick were clowning us in a playful way. It was actually helping the cause.

Anyways the good thing about going a little early is we got stamped and wrist banded for a lot of places that usally charge $10+. Then we blazed and had some pizza and went back through after 11:30 for free. Ost places seemed to really have a niche, so it was easy to sample.

Overall very positive. People were nice. And there were TONS of nice looking women.

Someone told us there's a cool Rican area in the SW? True?

Forgot about Sam Rivers. My boy is trying to get me to go see Goapele at The Social tonight. So we'll be peeping the headwrapnagchampa scene.

    What good with ya'll?

My wife and her family think I am crazy for having zero desire to go to Disney World / Epcot Center with my kids. I hate crowds, I hate humidity, and I hate getting got for $4 waters.

I feel exactly the same way. My sister is a Disney "nut" and always taking her kids (and my parents) down there. I can't think of anywhere I'd like to be less...

I've heard that Will's Pub is going to close down sometime soon and a doctor's office will be put in its place. It's a shame, since that place just had a great, no-frills vibe. The Peacock Room, which was nearby, is a nice lounge, but can be a bit too cliquey art student/hipster-ish...Better when it was more of a predominantly gay clientele.

And yeah, Orlando is pretty cool in spots (a lot of nice wine bars and dives in the Lake Eola area - a bit off of the "proper" downtown district, but just as many nice spots w/o the overwhelming tourist and frat aspect you can get with the Church St. area), but it's sort of going through the same thing UCF is now - identity crisis/transition period. I'd like to see how much both have grown in like 15-20 years.

This has nothing to do with Orlando but I just wanted to post it somewhere.

    Okay, carry on.

On some cosmic synchronicity shit today, I just got back from Florida, sign on to the strut for the first time in like a month and see this thread. I was in Orlando for the weekend, filming a wedding and then running around downtown. We fell for the same shit at Mako's (helllo $20 body shots), almost got in a fight with some fratboy at Antigua, tried to pick up a bartendress at Latitudes, checked out some headwrap-hop at the Social. It was weird being back down there, I went to school (Full Sail Male holler) in '01-'02. Didn't get a chance to check out Rock and Roll Heaven this time around, does that dude Calvin still work there?

Calvin works at Park Ave CDs now, which moved. They're no longer on Park Ave., which is great since the new location is twice the size for half the rent, but it's across from *shudder* Stardust Coffee. He's single handedly beefed up the hiphop and funk reissue sections, as well as curating a used vinyl section (so-so price-wise but neat selection). He also spins funk/soul at the Social and Peacock sometimes.

And man, someone who graduated from Full Sail using their skills in that department? You sir, have my respect.

Calvin actually has a soulstrut account, but has never posted! We've got to scare him out of the woodwork.

Bartendress @ latitudes.... did you pass place with nekkid chicks on swings next door? They always have a gaggle of em out front. Maybe it's makos, the place fatback went. Soft core porn vibe sounds about right. The interior looks like a war zone with all the smoke.

Just came back from asian market place on colonial. I love asian market place. You get enough rice, noodles, and sauce for a month and it's like $30.

I think wills is just moving...I've done a show at a place called Wills Pub South (North maybe) and was told that it was the new spot since the old one was having to close...

And at the social, i always have to get a vegan chili-cheese dog from the vendor across the street... I'm not even vegetarian but DAMN, those things are good!
