Like the belly dancer!!! WORD!
oh and Moogman - he's in Brasil
Pointman,
I can't be of too much help, cos' I live in Sao Paulo and went to Rio just once and didn't have too much time for digging and fun.
Anyway, I highly recommend you go to Baby Discos in downtown (Rua Goncalves Dias, 82 - store 102, very near the Uruguaiana subway station*. Phone (5521) - 3183-5824).
Ivaldo, the owner, is a very cool guy and can give you information about other places to dig.
I know that in Copacabana there are some places that sell records, but I don't have any address.
Maybe, M Dejean can help you out cos' he was in Rio some time ago.
Good luck and enjoy your stay in Rio.
* The red X in the map.
Peace
Thanks for the wishes and I hope your enjoying the weather out west. I tell you, if I owned a house in hell and another here in Houston, I would rent the one out in Houston and live in hell. It's fucking hot as shit here right now.
Moogman:
Thanks for the pointers. I was going to try to make it to Sao Paulo but I don;t think it's going be in the cards on this trip.
I'm not sure I'll be in Buenos Aires around that time, but I'll pm you some valuable info
I'm the Secretary of the Houston chapter. You're the man.
Also if you or anyone else in Argentina and Brazil is interested I could bring some trades with me. Particularly funk 45's.
holla.
Well, as far as I know, I'm the President and only member in Buenos Aires
I'll probably be in Uruguay around that week, but nothing is confirmed yet. We'll see.
I think A*i told me about you, but you didn't stand up when I posted my coming to your hood. Next time I got G's for ya....
K.
Ahh man sorry. I didn't see your post. When the board was acting up I could never get online and the week you were in Texas I was in Austin from Wen till Saturday night. I was ovre at Aleit's house Saturday early evening before heading back to Houston and he mentioned to me you guys got together in San Antonio that morning. I told him to call you and pass on my info to you but I guess it didn't happen. Breakestra played that night at the Museum of Fine Arts for their music series.
Next time your in town holler at me and we will go drink lonestar beer and nerd out on records man!

If you ever come to Sao Paulo, just PM me and I'll take you to some spots I know.
Peace
Somebody wanna school me on hot records from Argentina and Brazil?
I honestly don't know shit about what artists/labels from these regions. Somebody take me to South American record school 101 plaese.
no doubt - and despite's Kevin's snippiness (let it go - and if it makes you happy, it was all my fault and wackness), I'm fairly decent people.
I'm off to Bonnaroo!!!
currently in ouro preto. not too many lp's here, but plenty of colonial churches, tourists, and cerveja, in this charming little town. i did find a HOT SPOT in belo horizonte a few days ago, though. picked up about 2 each of jorge, gilberto, caetano, os mutantes, chico, etc - and it wasn't the wack 80's shit that's much easier to come across. just showed the owner, binho, my list and he started putting it all in front of me. went back a few days later, too, cuz the dude said he'd have the first 'clube da esquina' by milton nascimento/lo borges AND he had the tim maia 'racional vol 1' lp as well, but, alas, the store was closed.
i was in mexico city before this and was scoring pretty well there as well - la rev de emiliano zapata, peace and love, tinta blanca, 3 souls in my mind - until pablo started asking for 4,000 pesos for the 'back' lp by the spiders...
Rather than needing to know digging spots (I already done my research) - what I would like to know is what are the cool places to hang out: clubs etc..
Is there any decent nights worth checking out in Rio / Sao Paulo / BA?
One dj I wouldn't mind checking out is DJ NUTS - got his mixtape, mad nice. Anyone know how I can find where he will be playing over the next month or so? Any other DJ's / nights worth checking out?
I think DJ Nuts is in Europe right now; anyway, I'll call him next week and try to find where he's playing.
Usually he plays at some clubs in Sao Paulo, but according to him his set is most of mainstream rap/hip hop. I don't know if he has a night where he plays brazilian stuff.
You can check his myspace page: DJ Nuts at myspace
When you come to Sao Paulo try to check the nights of DJ Paulao, if you're looking for hearing some brazilian music. Paulao is at the same level as Nuts.
Peace
of the spots I found while I was there. Oh man, I wish I could go back
with the slightly increased knowledge of brasilian records I have now.
I'm still a complete novice, but there are certain pieces I saw for cheap
that I passed on because I was a non-knowing foolio
Remember to be selective when it comes to condition. A lot of records
are pretty rinked, and some records are so common there (i.e. Gal Costa,
Milton Nascimento and stuff like that), that you might as well hold out
until you find a good copy if you have the time to look around.
Also, sometimes records look busted and they are indeed busted,
but sometimes it's just dirt and grime that will come off easy after a
good rinse. I found a copy of "Gafeira Universal" by Banda Black Rio
that looked ugly and played ugly. After cleaning it, it looked and played
nice and smooth as can be. Again, scrutinize the vinyl.
CENTRO[/b]
EMPORIO MUSICAL
Rua Sete de Setembro, 163
Centro- RJ
2nd hand records, and a lot of them. Random selection. Variying prices.
The least interesting of the stores I went to.
CLASSIC DISCOS
Rua Sete de Setembro, 176
Centro - RJ
Used records. Good selection. Fair prices. Nice 1st floor shop
run by two laidback blokes
BABY DISCOS
Rua Gon??alves Dias, 82/102
Centro - RJ
Used records. Great selection. Expensive, probably due to the
amount of tourists coming in, but I did catch some goodness
in the cheapo bins. If you got the cash you will find heat here
easy. Ivaldo is no doubt a cool dude.
CINEL??NDIA[/b]
THE MARKET ON RUA PEDRO LESSA
This outdoor market is right next to the Cinel??ndia metro station.
The street is filled with permanent stands where vendors sell records.
I can't remember if it's open every day or just sat-sun, but as far
as I recall it's a daily operation.
GAVEA[/b]
TRACKS
Pra??a Santos Dumont, 140 lj.b
Gavea - RJ
New books, cds, dvds and vinyl downstairs and 2nd hand records upstairs.
Good selection. Fair prices. Nice, more modern looking store.
IPANEMA[/b]
BOCA DO SAPO
Rua Visconde de Piraja, 12-D
Ipanema - RJ
2nd hand books, cds and records. Good selection. Fair prices.
As I was staying in Ipanema, this was one of the stores I
frequented a lot. The brothers who run the place (forgot their names)
are really cool.
COPACABANA[/b]
L.O. MATTA
Rua Siqiera Campos, 143 Loja 94
Copacapana - RJ
2nd hand cds and records. Random selection. Cheap prices.
Crazy cramped store in the middle of a shopping mall.
Difficult to sift through their crates and shelves, but if you're
patient you could find some gems.
BARATOS DA RIBEIRO
Rua Barata Ribeiro, 354
Copacabana - RJ
2nd hand books and records. Good selection. Fair prices.
The only place I didn't get a pic from.
FLAMENGO[/b]
RED HOUSE
Rua Senador Verguiro, 218 - loja 7
Flamengo - RJ
I don't know anything about this shop, since I only learned
about it's existence the day before I was going home.
Let me know the deal if you go there!
MAJOR CO-SIGN.
MUITO OBRIGADO!!!
m dejean is absolutely right on here. i just returned from rio and ended up spending too much $ and time on great lp's in ultimately skated on condition. i'm more upset with myself for the records i did buy in not-so-hot condition than the ones i passed on. plus, there is so much more to see everywhere you go in that city. i'd recommend dinner on the lake and catching the sunset atop pao de acucar as well. truly one of the coolest places i've ever been to, right up there with barcelona.
another record spot worth checking out, though, is MODERN SOUNDS in cocapana, rua barata ribeiro 502d. they've got a nice selection in the basement - with a listening station, which is a huge plus - an excellent cd selection on the main floor, a cafe, live "jazz" in the evenings, and helpful staff.
oh, and one other key that i found in rio digging was doing it on WEEKDAYS, not weekends. i figured i'd make my biggest pull my last saturday there, but everything was closed all day or by 1pm.
Hey JohnShade
Nice to hear that you had a nice time in Rio, in despite of all the skated raers you found there.
Come on man, with all that beautiful places to go and lots of nice things to do there, do you really expect people would work on weekends?
Peace
Hey man, did you ever figure out if you will be in town?
Holler at me!
Instead of making a new thread, just thought I would pop in this great one and ask for any updates from anyone there or has been there in the last bit since this thread is a few years old...
Record stores or dealers?
Food spots of note?
Shopping...
Any off the beaten path places that are interesting?
Been to Brazil a few years ago. Staying right off the beach not far from Cantagalo.
Any tips would greatly be appreciated. Obrigado

can't recommend much beyond that, I'm a S??o Paulo boy myself, and I've only been to Rio once in my adult life. Had a fun time going to the Feira de S??o Cristov??o, a nordestino market type place shaped like a giant cangaceiro hat. Went on a saturday night and there was good food and various little stands playing mostly forr??, along with two bigger stages plus some karaoke places. We wound up in a little corner stand dedicated to reggae from S??o Luis do Maranh??o, good times. Also went on a hike to a waterfall in the Floresta da Tijuca. Heard the botanical garden is really nice, and Bar da Urca, the casino up on top of one of the hills, is supposed to be cool too.
If you make it down to Sao Paulo check out Fatiado Discos, it's a small place run out of some dude's garage in a residential neighborhood. They have killer shit for sale, though. The owners are like 20 years old! You will want to get in touch with them beforehand, though, since their hours are pretty random.
One last thing re: records: make sure to TRIPLE check condition on vinyl. This means looking long and hard at the grooves under bright light and also listening extensively to the best tracks on LPs to make sure they don't play without skips (even clean looking stuff can sound horrible or play with skips). This is obviously time consuming but it will pay off and make sure you don't get burned.
My friend drove us down to the beaches West of Rio in the Barra de Tijuca area (the actual beaches are called Grumari and Prainha). I highly recommend going down there since it is drop dead beautiful and there aren't many foreigners.
After hanging at the beaches all day, grab some food at Restaurante Point De Grumari for some facemelting caldeiras and seafood. It is a ten minute drive into the mountains from Praia Grumari, but well worth it and you will be rewarded with killer views and ice cold chopp.
