Caught the preview tonight. It was decent, not mindblowing or anything but not a total waste of time. Downside: too many subplots/too little time, some corny moments, dizzying "artistic" camera shots, super cheesy shots of Tip "rollerskating." T.I.'s character was cool, real mellowlike. Guess this was loosely based on Dallas Austin's life. Can anybody confirm this? Big Boi had some funny moments and I-spyed T-Mo, Khujo, Gipp and Bonecrusher. Plus you can't hate on some Big Rube words of wisdom. Kinda fucked up how T.I. got hit by that semi at the end, though. Sike! No spoilers from me, my friend. Can't really speak on the "realness" of it. I'm rather disconnected from the Hotlanta streets/campuses/skate rinks/step shows. Faux? What did you NOT hate about this movie?Herm

Not written by me, but taken from Metroblog Atlanta

    http://atlanta.metblogs.com/archives/2006/03/will_atl_raise.phtml

Access Atlanta broke the news this morning on a "secret" memo forwarded to Perimeter, Cumberland, Discover Mills, NorthPoint, Oglethorpe, Southlake and Augusta malls by Valor Security Service Perimeter Mall security director W. Mark Crowell about potential violence stemming from the new movie "ATL", a dramedy/coming-of-age film starring Atlanta rapper Tip "T.I." Harris. Color me suspicious, but this could probably stir a bit of controversy, especially considering the movie revolves around following your dreams and achieving your goals more than slanging 'caine and performing drive-bys. (Tongues are already starting to wag on SOHH Atlanta about the memo.)

Boyz N The Hood, it ain't. Roll Bounce? Perhaps.

I can't really wrap my head around the issue yet -- certainly, movie theatres need to have staff on hand for weekend releases in the event of large crowds and the like. That's proper planning. The issue that this memo supposedly circulates around some kneejerk racial reaction is unfounded right now. It also makes me wonder if Valor sent out similar memos for Crash or Confederate States of America, movies that would certainly cause a more visceral reaction to its viewers based on their content. Crowell is declining comment according to AA, and going to Valor's website and fielding an e-mail has not yielded any results.

I mean really...it's rollerskating at Jellybeans. Get your panties out of a bunch and let folks watch the movie.

(Sidebar: Dallas Austin and Chris Robinson originally had the movie titled "Jellybeans", but it was changed after Austin's Atlanta anthem "The ATL" became public. The song and the movie could both function as national advertising pieces to showcase the city. Why hasn't Brand Atlanta embraced the movie as a means of promotion for their campaign? Who knows...we've still got a week until the premiere.)

caught this movie last night. i think it was legit. i thought the characters, the story, the acting (big boi especially) were all solid.

TI, brandy, the williams sisters, heavy d, and big gipp were all in the house last night. brandy looked wasted and ti went home with some 6's.

Beware of the audience for this "Cooley High" retread, 31 March 2006

Author: Harv Spangle (content@rimnod.com) from Over the mountains of the
    moon

I went to see "ATL" in "the ATL" with the full expectation beforehand that
what I was going to witness was this season's self-conscious homage to young
urban angst with perhaps a few limp swerves thrown in to pass as fresh
touches so that there wouldn't be more than a few unflattering comparisons
to "Cooley High". What I didn't expect -however- was the runaway animus that
I was subjected to by the the early show audience for this film. While it's
true that I am a middle aged white guy I believe that I should have been
given some base human consideration by the rather "bellicose" denizens of
the nearby Federal housing project (many of whom, I found out later, were
hurricane evacuees) who surrounded me in row thirteen.

I did manage to follow the tissue thin storyline of the first half of the
show--in between threats by my fellow theater goers to "jack me for my
popcorn". I was however forced to retreat to another seat when a fellow who
bore an astonishing resemblance to "Big Boi" began exhibiting an unseemly
    interest in my Seiko watch.

The second half of "ATL" was by definition a "washout" for me as the trials
and tribulations of the urban youth of our time were tediously played out
with an extravagance of poker faced emotion. In that respect "ATL" echoes
--more than anything--a John Hughes style teen flick. And God knows how I
hate John Hughes. Yes - with all my soul.

So, If you are a seventeen year old African-American kid with twelve year
old sensibilities---by all means get your "crew" or your "dogs or doggettes"
together and check this movie out. But --if you are a 40 year old white guy
with a receding hairline you may want to give this movie a wide berth.

Was the above comment useful to you?

Probably his babymother, Tiny from Xscape:

She was rather far from being the cute one in the group.

Can you please highlight for us who you would deem to be "the cute one in the group"? I didn't know there was one...

    Haters.

I said "cute one in the group"

Not cute in an absolute sense.

Cute for a member of Xscape.

    Keisha was cute.

I assume that's who you're referring to as the one that was "TOO FAT," because she wasn't the one with the crackhead physique or the one that was a dude.
